In Pierre Berton’s ‘Vimy’, the reader is taken on an adventure following multiple Canadian soldiers who bravely fought in world war one. It is tough for any author to capture the real horrors of war, but in his non-fiction historical masterpiece, Canadian author and historian, Pierre Berton, does an excellent attempt to do just that. With accurate quotes and images it feels as if you have ventured across the cold Atlantic ocean, just as young Canadians did almost one hundred years ago. In 1914 Britain joined a war that had already had its first battles, primarily between the German and the French. Because Canada was under the rule of the king and not its own country (yet), she automatically joined on the side of Britain. When this happened, there was much commotion in Canadian streets. “All Across Canada from Toronto to Quebec and Calgary to Vancouver, men were rushing to enlist.” (Berton 17) Many were turned down. Some because they were too unfit some because they wore glasses and some because they were too small. But the most popular reason was because the boys were too young. The legal age to enlist in Canada is eighteen but it was not uncommon for boys who were only seventeen or even younger to lie about their age. Boys were over the moon to get out of school early, some quitting after just grade ten. It was the thing to do back then. Like modern commercials we see on television where marketers use advertising techniques like bandwagoning, young boys were anxious to be in the army and more importantly, not to be left out. These events demonstrate the first theme present in the first half of the book- patriotism. Or in this case, false patriotism, because these boys, now soldiers, were very mislead. They thought of war as heroic cavalry charges and sieges that would go down in history, but once they arrived in France they quickly realized otherwise. Patriotism is evident throughout this book, but mostly during the chapters concerning the Canadians. Pierre Berton…

The consequences of gender change can be disastrous for a human being. That’s what happened to Bruce Reimer. He was born a completely normal boy. But after a circumcision, he had his genitalia completely destroyed. His mother was desperate and didn’t know what to do until she met “John Money, who was a psychologist and sexologist well-known for his specialized research in sexual identity. Money was a professor of pediatrics and medical psychology at Johns Hopkins University, from 1951 until his death.” (Duffy, J. 1999) He was a psychologist not a surgeon. He convinced Bruce’s parents to change him into a girl through surgery. John Money, a sex researcher wanted to do an experiment and used this family to pursue it. The procedure was done and Bruce Reimer had his name changed for Brenda, which made possible to start the experiment.…

In the article “Becoming a 100 Percent Straight, the author Michael L. Messner, studied heterosexuality and how it's influenced by socitey. Heterosexuality is viewed as the default sexuality. According to Messner, heterosexuality is more than just a sexuality. Heterosexuality is a constructed identity and it has nothing to do with sexual acts. What Messner meant by the term “doing heterosexuality” was that heterosexuality and masculinity was not something he was, rather is was something he was doing (Messner, 70). Heterosexual men are expected to act differently than homosexual men. For example, hetersexual men are not suppose to act feminine because only gay men do that. Heterosexuality has a privileged status in society than homosexuality (Anderson, 82). Heterosexuality is more easily accepted in society because they are enforcing gender norms. Masculine-acting men are "acting" the part of the heterosexual, dominant, "normal" man. Homosexuality is not a normative form for a…

Patriarchy is “the systematic organization of male supremacy” or the social system organized around gender difference (55). The system of patriarchy has created a set of Eurocentric masculinist epistemological conditions for today, because of this it creates social normalities which determines how people should present their gender and how they should fit into society. Society has made it acceptable to limit gender and create a stratification system to rank statuses unequally (65). Social constructions of hetero-patriarchy that have been formed expect women “to be modest and virtuous, to look beautiful, and, simultaneously to lure men” they hurl these ideas at us through propaganda and media (150). As a woman, I’m supposed to be heterosexual, beautiful, feminine and easily oppressed, we’re expected to fit in a cis female binary and do our gender correctly. Should we choose to break our binary we are sometimes punished for it “through name calling, discrimination, hate and outright violence” (155). Society tries to reject ideas that don’t fit within the specific stratification, I happen to not fit into the typical social stratification. I normally present myself as a cis female, however I’m not heterosexual. Being homosexual is an inequality within whiteness, and it’s not the preferred sexuality according to social constructions.…

I believe the LGBT community as a whole has made the most significant gains in the last 20 years. This can be proven with such facts as that in 1993 the all famous “Don’t ask don’t tell” policy was enforced, this permitted gays to serve in the military but banning homosexual activity. From 2004-2006 Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Connecticut all legalized all civil-unions. More recently, in 2012, both Washington and Maryland approved same-sex marriages. All of these points are all crucial to the development of the LGBT itself. This is why they have the most tremendous gains, especially in the last 20 years. While the fewest belongs to the improvements to citizen of the US with Asian descent. The issue with the citizens from Asian descent is not as pressing as it was in the past. The only highlight for this group was all the way in 1952 when foreign-born Asians were just given the right to become citizens of the United States. Some possible options for members of Asian descent is to incorporate themselves more in today’s society whether that be political, or in the entertainment industry. If they are able to do this, it will show that they are strong and have the opportunity to excel in things. This will showcase their abilities, thus, allowing greater acceptance from Americans. Though this is not an extremely pressing issue currently, it is still significant to some and should be treated with the upmost respect. If Asian descendants are able to do these things, their lives and their children’s life will be more prosperous than ever before.…
