Samurais And Knights: Similarities And Differences
Even though samurais and knights are a bit alike, I think that they are more different than alike for many reasons. First of all, the training of samurais and knights are quite different. Samurais received received training on spiritual discipline. They also learned poetry. They studied Kendo, which was the art of fencing with bamboo sticks. They learned the code of the samurai, Zen Buddhism. At age 14, trainees officially became samurais. This happened in a ceremony called genpuku. The training of knights was different. Knights received religious instructions because they were Christians. At age 7 or 8, a knight started serving a powerful relative. They were called pages. They ran errands and learned how to use a sword. They also learned how to ride horses. At age 14, they had the chance to become squires. Squires would accompany their masters in battle. They would feed, dress, and look after the horses and hope they would become knights. If a squire was approved, then he would usually become a knight by the age of 21. Not all squires became knights. As you can see, the training of samurais and knights are very different. …show more content…

Imagine yourself as a Samurai, you are in the middle of defeating the European knights who are covered in plated armor. You begin to worry but then, you win, these are the reasons why a Samurai is better than a knight. Feudalism in Europe and Japan were both very similar. They both has rulers, and they both had rulers who hired nobles, and they both had nobles who hired landowners, and they both had landowners who hired warriors to protect the slaves and their land. If samurai and knights were to have fought against each other the samurai would have won because, they had movable armor and it was easier for them to dodge anything that a knight would slowly lunge at them with. If a Samurai and knights battled the knights would have fallen because, their armor was very defective. One of these requirements were, you must be a boy born into a wealthy family (Macdonald 32). Although it wasn’t a necessity to be born into a wealthy family, it was a definite bonus in helping you become a knight. This is due to knights having to buy all the equipment that they might use in battle and tournaments, but before doing all of that, the knights needed to train for 12 years. When a young boy turned 8 years old, his parents would decide if they would sent their son away to be a page (Macdonald 32). For the next 6 years, a page would learn good etiquette (Macdonald 32). In addition you pages would be trained by soldiers who will teach him how to use a sword, a lance, and a mace (Macdonald 32). A page would also learn how to ride a horse (Macdonald 32).
