The library has six floors, each categorized by subject for each level. The total size of the library is over 376,000 square feet and with six floors above ground and even one below. When I first went to the library, I could not believe how massive it was. The town where I come from is not even close to the size of this library. The library offers free internet usage, a nice, quiet environment for studying, and it’s a great place for friends and students to get together to form study groups. Even the library website has resources you can use in the comfort of your own home. Once there, you can renew the books you’ve checked out just in case you cannot return them by the due date. The online services also offer a patron the ability to obtain a library card, read about exhibitions and programs, and reserve computers for usage. However, this is the new main library. It was stationed in its current location in 1986. Due to the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989, the old main library was destroyed and a task force was set up to complete the design of Civic Center. At a cost of US$109.5 million, construction on the current Main Library began on1993 and completed in 1995 and opened a year later on 1996. The old main library was rebuilt as the Asian Art Museum.
