Sandra Cisneros Turning Point
Turning points are events in people’s life that can affect their life in good or bad way. In “Eleven” by Sandra Cisneros, “Middle School Loneliness”, and Hatchet by Gary Paulsen had all faced life changing events (Turning Points). They all adapted to their turning point, but it wasn’t easy doing so. “Eleven” by Sandra Cisneros is a drama about the main character, Rachel, turning eleven, but still feels ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one. Rachel’s turning point is that her teacher, Mrs.Price, put an ugly sweater on her desk and no one was claiming it. As stated in the text, ”If I was 102 I’d have known what to say when Mrs.Price put the red sweater on my desk.”. (Cisneros,45). Rachel adapts by trying to think about …show more content…
Rachel had a problem at school, but she will forget it and have a good birthday. Like Rachel, the Boy from “Middle School Loneliness” had faced a life changing event. The genre of this story is teamwork. It’s about a boy who moved to a new city and school with his dad. The boy’s turning point is that he moved to a new school, but is no longer team captain of a winning basketball team and no longer the math club president. He is also the only Hispanic student there. As stated in the text, “I was the only Hispanic student”. (StudySync,69). The boy adapts by helping out his team with their problems and now they’re communicating with teamwork. The Boy had a different background than others, but found a way to work through and succeed in his school. Like Rachel and the Boy, Brian from Hatchet, faced a life changing event. It’s an adventure. It’s about Brian getting stranded in a Canadian Forest all alone and trying to survive. Brian’s turning point is that he is stranded and needs resources to survive. As stated in the text, “The plane rolled to the right down to slam into the lake”.(Paulsen,29). Brian adapts by learning from his mistakes and builds shelter. Brian was stranded alone, but

This is my INS on Hatchet. The book was written by Gary Paulsen the author that also wrote previous book I did an INS on. The book is set in the Canadian woods. I'm not sure what time period this book takes place in because it doesn't say in the book. I'm guessing somewhere in the 1980's or 90's. Now I will summarize the story of this book. The story is about Brian Robeson, a 13 year old boy who is going to visit his dad in Canada after his parents' divorce. He goes from Hampton, New York to Canada on a small plane. The driver has a heart attack and dies. Brian takes over the controls and crashes into the woods. Brian is now stranded all by himself in these woods. He thinks that he will be rescued, but that doesn’t end up happening. He finds berries and other types of foods and uses those to eat. Skip all the way to the end and a tornado strikes his area and destroys his shelter. After that, he notices that the tail of the plane has emerged and he goes into it and gets the survival pack. In it, he finds a transmitter and it calls a rescue helicopter thing to him. He then gets rescued. That is pretty much bigger main parts of the book. I chose this book for INS because I said that there are some similar things about this book and the one I did previously and that interested me so I decided to do this book for my ins. I also wanted to read this book again because I forgot some of the stuff that happens throughout the book.…

At the beginning, the author reveals Rachel’s mind state,in her persuasive thoughts that being eleven changes nothing on your emotions and attitudes at times. The author defines Rachel’s vision of birthday. However, the author mentions Rachel’s experiences on her eleventh birthday to strengthen the thesis that being eleven, does not quite delete the fact that you might still feel you are younger, and have some break outs at times.…

When I read the book and saw the movie I found many differences between the events in the book Hatchet and the events in the movie A Cry in the Wild. In the book when the plane crashed in the wilderness the rescue plane came after he founded food, made fire, and a shelter to live. When the rescue plane came Brian ran to make more fire to send signals in the sky so they could see him. In the movie the rescue plane came the same day as the plane crashed and he didn’t have fire or made a shelter to live so he screamed loudly so they could hear him or see him but the plane turned away. In this event I found significant difference and little similarities between “Hatchet” and “A Cry in the Wild”…

American writers such as Japanese-American Dwight Okita and Mexican-American Sandra Cisneros were both greatly influenced by US culture. Okita's "Response to Executive Order 9066" and Cisneros's "Mericans" establish topics of American identity and family relationships. Both Okita's poem and Cisneros's short story share themes that American identity comes from merging cultures and supporting one another is important in family relationships.…

The turning point highlights a change in the character Lewis's view on mental illness. In the beginning Lewis was very much on the same page as his friends Lucy and Nick, in that they saw mentally ill people as outcasts. This is shown by the way Nick says "they are coming to take me away ha ha, to the funny farm"(p41)…

The message that the short story Eleven by Sandra Cisneros tells is that even though you get older you’re still all the same ages you were before. Rather you be five and have to sit on you’re moms lap because you’re scared or when you’re 10 and you might say something stupid. Sandra uses the element imagery quite a bit in her short story. “…When I put one arm through one sleeve of the sweater that smells like cottage cheese, and then the other arm through the other and stand there with my arms apart like if the sweater hurts me and it does, all itchy and full of germs that aren’t even mine.” This particular sentence really describes how awful the sweater must be, she says that one arm of the sleeve smells like cottage cheese and the other is itchy and full of germs that aren’t even hers. The mental image I got from that was a sweater that was a big, ugly, and smelly heap of a very itchy red sweater. Another element of voice Sandra uses is diction. “Only today I wish I didn’t have only eleven years rattling inside me like pennies in a tin Band-Aid box.” This example of diction was one that would stick out the rest of the story. Instead of saying I wish I were older than 11, Sandra uses diction to emphasize how much she would love to be older than 11. All in all Sandra does an incredible job throughout the book in using elements of voice to portray Rachel, not only did she uses imagery and diction but she used detail, syntax, and tone. She very nicely described how all people will revert back to past ages. Overall, she uses many elements of voice to depict the message of this…

The House On Mango Street and “ Only Daughter” both prove that being an Mexican- American women is a struggle. As Cisneros shows her first hand experience, and as well shows it through story telling. Yet without telling a biography and going straight to the point she shows emotion by using literary elements. Sandra Cisneros Chose to use metaphors and imagery to express the hard ships of being a Mexican- American women. If Sandra Cisneros did not use literary elements to show the lifestyle of a Mexican-American women, the points that she showed in both the texts would not have been as powerful as they were.…

    Eleven by Sandra Cisneros

A short story ‘Eleven’ by Sandra Cisneros dwells upon the memories of an eleven-year-old girl that spends her birthday at school and gets into a discomforting situation with her teacher because of her lack of confidence. In spite of the multiple colloquial phrases and childish expressions, this is a very philosophical piece of writing. It touches upon such global and adult issues as experience, freedom, aging, life and death, knowledge and restrictions. The symbolism is very sophisticated here – under the veiled mask of a simple classroom occasion the writer sets multiple questions. Do people gather enough experience with age? What secret knowledge and power is revealed after each birthday? Can a simple life situation drive one at an older age more efficiently than real calendar time does? The complexity of an eleven-year-old girl (who is almost a teenager, by the way) is derived from the first-person style of narration. The author tries to hide her real wisdom and age through the expressions like “little animal noises” but it still seems not convincing because so many serious questions are being asked in each paragraph of the story. She is very capable in understanding her own emotions and thoughts – an ability that is not very typical for such a young age is eleven. Her descriptions of the surrounding world are very clear and comprehensive; the usage of metaphors is quite mature in spite of the phrasing.…

In the story” Eleven”, Rachel acts more like a child then a tween. The narrator states, “I’m and it’s my birthday today and I’m crying like I’m three in front of everybody”. This proves that Rachel is eleven and is crying like a three year old child. The short story says, “My face all hot and spit coming out of my mouth.” This shows how she is making all these little animal noises and acting like a child or even baby. In this story “Eleven”, Rachel acts more like a child then a…

A turning point is defined as a period in history when a significant change occurs. Three of these turning points were the neolithic revolution, the age of exploration, and the collapse of communism in the soviet union. The neolithic revolution was the process of shifting from hunting and gathering to farming and starting a civilization. The age of exploration was when the European started to explore the whole world and not just what they already knew. Both of these turning points brought great positive and negitve.…
