Sandro Botticelli was born March 1, 1445. Botticelli full name is Alessandro di Mariano Filipepi Botticelli. Botticelli was nicknamed by his older brother “Sandro Botticelli” meaning 'small wine cask' (Artble). Botticelli was the son of a tanner. A tanner is someone who makes leather from animal skins. Botticelli was never one that enjoyed school. Instead, to get him through the day, he would make witty jokes to keep himself entertained. Sandro Botticelli was originally trained as a Goldsmith (someone who makes gold articles) by his older brother, then he entered a studio in Florence, Italy and was taught painting by Fra Filippo Lippi (Artble). Fra Filippo Lippi was an Italian painter of the 15th century. Working with Lippi gave Botticelli greater opportunities in the future because he knew very many important people. master. He also completed his first dated painting the Fortitude and completed the Seven Virtues. At the age of fifteen Botticelli owned his own works shop which helped form his artistic style. Neo-Platonism is a style Botticelli used to incorporated Christianity and paganism, which captured a variety of people’s interest.
Botticelli reached the peak of his artistic abilities at about the middle of his life. Thanks to the Medici family he had money and fame. The Medici family was filled with wool merchants and bankers. They were extremely wealthy and ruled Florence for around 200 years. They were very important people to Sandro Botticelli and influence him and the renaissance times and many ways. Botticelli was asked by the Pope himself (Pope Sixtus IV at the time) to travel to Rome and help paint some parts of the Sistine Chapel. In 1490 Botticelli changed his art style. He started focusing on painting with a lot of small figures so that his art seemed more alive (Artble). There was a point in time is Sandro Botticelli’s life where many of his friends and family, and even some of his admirers became very worried about him. His artwork was going down a deep path and many people felt a depression or an anger and rage feeling while evaluating his work. There were even occasions when they saw his work as ungodly and would take his paintings and burn them. Once Botticelli became crippled later in life he got less art request. Botticelli continued to work on his set drawings but never was able to finish (Arble).
Botticelli success declined after coming under the influence of the monk Savonarola.
Savonarola encouraged the burning of books, paintings, drawing, and any other art work that he considered ungodly. Throughout his life, he never had a serious relationship and never married or had kids. It actually terrified him the thought of being married; so much so, that he would have nightmares about it. He was content with having the company of his friends and family. Botticelli sadly died at the age of 65 in Florence on May 17, 1510. No one really knows the cause of death, but some people think it was because of old age. It was uncommon for people to live as long as they do now back in the fifteenth century. He was buried alongside his family behind a church. Some say he died poor, but this may be because the illusion of being “rich” was not in the hands of Di Vince and Michelangelo. In the end, Botticelli was well known as an altar piece painter, but could not keep up with Leonardo Di Vince and Michelangelo. He will always be known as one of the most important artist of the renaissance
times.
