Santiago The Shepherd Monologue
I, Santiago the shepherd, have finally arrived at the old, destroyed, and abandoned church with my flock of sheep. An enormous sycamore tree lies where the sacristy used to be. I might as well spend the night here as it is beginning to become dark. When I awoke from my slightly uncomfortable slumber, it was still dark. A strange dream kept on waking me up. I have only had the dream twice. However, the worst part of the dream is that I never see the ending of it. I always wake up before I see it. Since I am already awake, I shall go and wake up some of my sheep. In some odd way, the sheep seem to follow the same routine that I follow. For example, as I began to wake up, the sheep began to wake up. I also feel that the sheep understand what I say or do.
I only talked to my sheep about one subject lately: the girl, the merchant’s daughter. A year ago, a friend referred me to a merchant that needed some wool. Once I arrived at the merchant’s location, he seemed busy and told me to wait until the afternoon. Thus, I decided to wait on the steps nearby. The merchant’s daughter appeared behind me; we started to talk for two hours. Our conversation was about our own experiences through life. During that moment, I wished that the day would never end. I ultimately fell in love. In four

Since I only have a few more days until I see the merchant’s daughter; I got a haircut and finished some errands. While walking to Tarifa, I remembered that there is a woman who can interpret dreams. I decided to visit the woman in hopes of figuring out the meaning of my dream. When I arrived at the woman’s house, she took me to a room in the back of the house. Inside the house, was a sacred picture of Jesus’ heart. The woman began to pray a gypsy’s prayer which alarmed me. I had previous interactions with gypsies during my travels; they were known to trick people. Despite the concern, I had to know my dream’s

RIP Chloe Henry. I didn't really know her that much. We used to go to school together and even though we were both really young I remember your kindnes. All I hear people say about you is how much you cared about everyone and how nice and sweet you were. It's not fair to anyone to have to go through what happened to you. And it's not fair for any parents to have their child pass away. It's not fair how young you were and how many things you never had a chance to do. When I found out about this it made me feel absolutely terrible and I still do whenever I think about this injustice. We all love you and pray for you. You did nothing to deserve this. It makes me so fucking pissed off this happened I don’t understand how this coud be done. We all…

Although one’s good deeds may often not be acknowledged, the inevitable lesson of maturity can be taught through such experiences. In “A&P”, Sammy is a teenage clerk who is not acknowledged for accomplishing what he thinks is a good deed. During a hot day, three teenage girls walks into the A&P grocery store, wearing only their bathing suits. The image of the girl’s revealing attire provides an absolute contrast to both the simple interior of the store and also of the other conservative customers. Sammy describes the customers as “sheeps” because they look mindless as they follow each other around the aisles in continual, constant motion. However, these three girls conflict with the imagery of “sheeps” by breaking the norms of what the A&P grocery store, and society in general, has proclaimed as acceptable. These three girls symbolize the reverse of what Sammy has been accustomed to seeing in the store, which are the pedestrian and conformed customers. Infrequency rather than frequency triggers the events that occur in the A&P…

Our religion, of course, was Animism, based on spirits and animals. Every time I had a dream, my grandfather told me it would be amazing because the Dreamcatcher wards off all evil. My grandmother had made the one I use. Yet every time I dream, she comes to me, only in my sleep. Grandfather says she’s trying to tell me something, something only I would understand. It turns out the Dreamcatcher is sacred and special and had bizarre patterns, silky smooth deer skin, feathers as meticulous as silk, and beads that made time elapse quickly if you glared long enough…

I found the connection between dreams and ancient religions to be the most intriguing part of the reading. It certainly does make sense that dreams might have inspired animism and other forms of religion and the way that the ancients interacted with dreams seems to share many similarities with how we interact with dreams. Similar to what happens in a Seneca Dream Guessing ceremony, people today analyze their dreams and interpret them in various ways, although it is not always in a spiritual light and there are many more resources now besides for friends, family, and other tribe members to offer ideas of what dreams might mean. Additionally, just as people in ancient times might have interpreted their dreams according to their religion, considering dreams to be visions or proof of possession by some higher power, people today may do the exact same thing. Considering how odd dreams can seem and how we still don’t seem to have much knowledge on their causes today, this comes across as unsurprising.…
