1888 PressRelease Packing boxes at the Orange County Food Bank is an annual event that SBGA invests volunteer power into each year. Company leaders and volunteers look forward to returning with greater force and double the output in 2015.
In a world where hunger and malnutrition are an everyday reality to many countries, it's shocking to realize that there are people going without food in our own backyard. Hidden in the cities and towns of the nation's wealthiest areas are thousands who struggle to put food on the table; The Orange County Food Bank, in conjunction with the Community Action Partnership of Orange County, works to ensure that their plates are not empty.
"On average we send out 26,000 boxes filled with food each month," the head coordinator of Orange County
Food Bank volunteer events explained. "But the thing to remember today is that these boxes aren't just freebies. This is the motivation that brings these people grandmas, aunts, uncles, and little brothers and sisters the strength they need to keep going; to try for selfsufficiency and a better quality of life."
This weekend, over 100 volunteers from the Small Business Growth Alliance (SBGA) gave up their Saturday morning to assemble food donation packages at the Orange County Food Bank. Given careful orders of how the boxpacking system should work, team members of SBGA each took on important roles from building boxes and shuffling them down the line to managing food groups and taping the final product shut. Split into two teams, volunteers raced to fill their boxes and give the most back to the community.
"It was amazing to see so many people not only come together in the name of helping others, but do it so enthusiastically!" the spokesperson of SBGA's Volunteer Leadership Committee said. "One employee brought her eightyearold son to help who said he now

The San Antonio Food Bank (SAFB) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to fight hunger in Southwest Texas through food distribution, programs, and education. The SAFB contributes to society by providing food and grocery’s at no cost, to the citizens of Bexar County, and other Southwest Texas communities. On the day of conducting my civil service my teammates and I carpooled with each other to get to the SAFB. Once we arrived we promptly started our service. The service we performed consisted of creating bags of food to be distributed. My teammates and I had the responsibility of making sure each bag had potatoes as well as discarding any potatoes that weren’t fit for consumption.…

My children and I volunteered to help set up the facility for this year’s Thanksgiving dinner. The day before Thanksgiving we drove to downtown Atlanta to the Georgia World Congress and Convention Center. We were amazed by the number of volunteers already there. There were people from all walks of life, executives, athletes, clergy, housewives and fathers, and even some people who were clearly in need themselves.…

The Kansas Food Bank in its mission statement promises to provide a comprehensive and compassionate Hunger Care whenever and wherever it is needed to families in Kansas. As a result of their mission statement, their operations have improved over the years and have grown tremendously to now serving over 85 counties within the state of Kansas, which includes over 530 hunger relief partners. Over 11 millions pounds of food was distributed just this past year. Deliveries are made to the different schools and agencies based on needs and the delivery schedule is clearly planned out by KFB administration. There’s no sign of stopping as they currently have a five-year plan that includes five more counties. This plan will be rolled out on a yearly basis for the next five years. This will add to the current distribution of 11 million pounds of food on a yearly basis. One would imagine that an operation of this magnitude and being done on a weekly basis would require more labor hours and truck space to carry out this massive scale of operations. To our surprise, they only have one truck and one driver that delivers all this amount of food. So there lies the bottleneck of this operation: they have enough food to deliver to the clients and enough clients to receive the food, but not enough manpower hours and truck space to do all the deliveries within a decent amount of time. Some of the delivery routes can take up to three days to complete. What if the truck breaks down and repair takes more time to fix than what was anticipated? What if the driver falls sick and is off for days? What would happen to the delivery operation? It was clear to us that they were putting all their eggs in one basket, in this case, one truck and one man. We were told that the driver is on the verge of a burnout since he’s been doing the deliveries all by himself for such a long time. Having to do all the deliveries by himself in a short amount of time, one can imagine the stress…

First, I would like to give my opinion of whether this book was worthwhile at the beginning of this book review. Because I believe this is one of the most moving books written today about the problem of hunger in America. I also believe that this book should be required reading for every "elected official" who has the power to end the needless tragedy of hunger in America. This is a very well-written, well-researched book based on real people with real stories not just about numbers, trends, stats, or theories.…

When I first pulled up to the small house located on Tyree street, there was a line of vagrant and less fortunate people. My first task was to escort each individual to the back of the house to the pantry room. In the pantry, I had to give each person a plastic bag and they were able to choose a few items from the room. When they were done, they moved to the clothes closet to pick out a few pairs of clothes and/or shoes. If they need assistance with anything else, someone was there to help them with their needs. There was a specific amount of food each person was given but not a set amount of clothing. After I was done with one client, I repeated those steps with the next. Throughout the semester, we've talked about minorities in the United States. I have taken time out to actually observe the people around the community and I've realized how much they are suffering from several social problems such as economic inequalities, families and children living in poverty, and the inability to apply or be approved for jobs to have the opportunity to help their families. Charities and nonprofit organizations play a major role in helping families who aren't able to help…

I was much relieved to read Scott W. Allard’s quote “. . . but we also know that the south suburbs have been grappling with rising poverty rates for some time.” I personally have been witness to this rise. When I first lived in the south suburbs circa 1980, I had never heard of a food pantry, however, twenty-five years later, I found myself volunteering at one.…

The Food Bank was the perfect place to offer our services and it was an honor to participate with my fellow peers on this particular volunteer experience. The staff and volunteers welcomed us with warm, open arms. Due to prior registration through one of our students, those arms were overly outstretched. As a class, we had an opportunity to participate in the packaging of the foods that were being donated to those families in need in the Houston area. It was our job to sort these foods in their designated containers. These containers needed to be separated for items such as canned foods, sweets, bottled drinks, and household items just to name a few. Before the rules of engagement were discussed, the people facilitating the whole movement provided us with general rules we needed to adhere to promote the overall experience. In this beginning, proper instruction was given to all concerning the Do’s and Don’ts of doing such a task. This task required us to be active, and to remain on our feet while adhering to a few rules. Ultimately, they wanted to make sure the process would be a smooth one. There were tons of boxes in the back, where we had to go and retrieve them, separating the contents in the bins. After the bins were filled up to the top, we now transferred them to on movable shelves that stacked bins into the back. This process ran smoothly and we had no problems assisting others. As time progressed, we had opportunities to get to know some of the participants when we stopped for lunch. Many of the volunteers who partook in this experience showed the same amount of willingness to help the community as the University of Houston-Victoria students. We all worked as a team and had a great time doing it.…

A food pantry, or food bank, provides food to those who are unable to afford food due to economic issues. These issues can range from job loss, homelessness, natural disaster, etc. Most commonly it is low income households that find food banks most convenient as food banks are, according to the Houston Food Bank website, “a private, nonprofit organization.” These nonprofits organizations offer food to in need households at no charge as part of their charitable services. This of course is ideal for those households that have only one working or no working adults.…

We had a positive experience within our team. Canned food drives are a great way to help any charitable organization that works with the homeless or families in need. Although they are most popular during the holidays, canned food drives provide assistance that many people and organizations need all year. Planning and organizing a canned food drive was a great community service project. We knew it was necessary to set the goals for the team and define the boundaries in which we worked.…

Being on National Honor Society and sports teams throughout high school, I had enjoyed participating in many volunteer experiences before coming to Drake. Every year our basketball team would collect food around our community to be donated to various food drives in nearby cities. With only general assumptions about food pantries, I always wondered how they worked. Now, after being able to volunteer at the IMPACT food pantry over the last few months, my original assumptions about food panties has transformed. The service-learning class I took this semester challenged many other perspectives in my life.…
