Being active in National Charity League for six years, I have had the pleasure of working with many different philanthropies, my favorite being The Tualatin School House Pantry. Operating out of the basement of a church, the food bank helps to feed families in the community who are struggling financially. While my first few experiences at the food pantry were emotionally challenging, I found them to be very eye opening. I met many people from different backgrounds, yet they all shared the same hardship, the inability to afford food for themselves and their families. Wanting to do more for the recipients, I received training to be one of the personal shoppers.…
Now that Christmas is over, I am sure you all are wondering how our can challenge is taking place, especially since Super Bowl Sunday is around the corner ( Feb 5th to be exact). We are collecting cans and various other food items for our local food pantry, which is always in great need during the winter months. Not only are we collecting for a great cause and need, we are also collecting to see Pastor wear some great Steeler’s gear. As part of the challenge, he would wear the Almost Famous Steeler’s Stole for 1000 collected items. If we collected 2000 items…there is a special item Pastor will wear. Let’s hurry and collect those food items to help our neighbors and convert Pastor in a Steeler’s fan.…
First, I would like to give my opinion of whether this book was worthwhile at the beginning of this book review. Because I believe this is one of the most moving books written today about the problem of hunger in America. I also believe that this book should be required reading for every "elected official" who has the power to end the needless tragedy of hunger in America. This is a very well-written, well-researched book based on real people with real stories not just about numbers, trends, stats, or theories.…
Once a month, our organization, Ketchikan CPOA helps the local Salvation Army Soup Kitchen prepare meals, serve and clean up, I have dedicated three years of monthly service to helping plan, prep, and cook and serve the citizens of Ketchikan, AK who need it. This service has had a profound effect on my life. The most memorable time I can recall was my first time attending the soup kitchen. I enjoyed meeting the staff at the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen, working with my fellow Coast Guard men and women to prep the meal, and to meet the patrons who attended breakfast that day.…
The first memory I have of the Pantry was as a child and I would go up to the attic of the old farm-house on 1063 N. Dugan Rd., Urbana, Ohio. My parents, Harry and Donna Dachenbach, moved from the farm of John Yordy on St. Rt. 36 where my sister was born, to the farm on Dugan Rd. This would have been about 1937 or 38. The house was a very large two-story house with a long attic that was scary for a young boy because it was dark, dusty and filled with junk and trash. There was a pair of broken boards between the two sides of the attic that my sister told me, “If you fall through the break, you will fall all the way to the basement”. Though an absolute falsehood, I sucked it up and always gave a wide berth to the broken boards. There was a large family living on the farm before Mom and Dad moved in, I believe their name was Hess. Back in the late 1800's – early 1900's a family by the name of James owned and lived in the house. The pantry was stored up in the attic against one end and was covered in dust and bird poop. After we got a TV and I got to see “Captain Video and his Video Ranger”, the Pantry became my space ship console (no color TV…
The immersion of a holistic education is and remains to be one of my greatest values. My desire for comprehensive studies is manifested in my attendance of a liberal arts institution. I’ve had the privilege of being exposed to various academic fields and disciplines through my time at secondary school and university. Yet, developing one of my primary interests wasn’t incited in a classroom, but rather in a food pantry. My experience working for a nonprofit pantry program developed my passion for marketing and extensively the field of business. Through serving the nonprofit and observing the remarkable progression of the pantry’s success, I witnessed the power of marketing for businesses and nonprofits alike. It is my intention to further learn…

The Indiana University South Bend (IUSB) Student Food Bank requires a statement of intent and concept to guide the organization, and inform the individuals who receive goods and services from the organization. This can be accomplished by identifying the mission, vision, and organizational values. The mission is a sentence describing a company's function, markets and competitive advantages: a short written statement of your business goals and philosophies. The vision is an aspirational description of what an organization would like to achieve or accomplish in the mid-term or long-term future.…
They have seven programs that simultaneously educate the community about the hunger problem in Georgia, and they also make sure that people throughout Atlanta are being fed. These seven programs include Atlanta Prosperity Campaign, Atlanta’s Table, Community Gardens, Hunger 101, Hunger Walk/Run, Kids In Need and Product Rescue Center. I had the opportunity to participate in two of their programs, which were the Hunger 101 program and the Product Rescue Center. I was first introduced to this organization by volunteering for their Hunger 101 program. This program was very enlightening, and it inspired me to make a difference in my community. This program entailed an interactive group session that educated the volunteers about the hunger problem in Georgia. The volunteers participated in a workshop where we were given the role of being a less fortunate person for a day. We were given this person’s income, how many people lived their house, and all the expenses that they had to pay for. We had to use those values to calculate how much money that person has to spend on food per day. I discovered that most of these people had no more than three dollars to spend on food for their whole family in one day.…
