Meals on wheels is a service that provides hot meals for elderly people that are unable to go out and buy foods to cook for themselves. A doctor, hospital, can refer you or even go online and refer yourself. Meals on wheels are a voluntary service and they have a large variety of foods to choose from such as dietary foods, soft foods, hard foods and diabetic meals. They cater for all different types of preferences. The council and local organisations provide and fund meals on wheels. If we looked at meals on wheels on a geographical level, it is only available in England and Wales it is not available in Northern Ireland due to less elderly people using the service to which they decided to use the money funded for meals on wheels for something more productive that all elderly and the population could use.
This could be due to the foods allowed in some religions. For example in Islam, halaal foods are only allowed to be eaten which have been cooked separate from other meats. Some individuals may have specific needs, which means they might not be able to eat or digest foods properly which means the service will not be of any use to them. The individual preferences for the person may be different to what the service make which may make the service user not want to eat certain things as the individual may not like the foods cooked or the way it was cooked for example if it is undercooked or overcooked. Meals on wheels provides for different needs by making sure that the food cooked is suitable for different religions and preferences. They make sure that the food arrives on time and the individual is able to take the food with them.
