Ways to avoid stereotyping and discrimination in a Care home. (P4)
Meals
In Care Homes, when it comes to meal time the patients should then be treated with a lot of respect as they will not be able to do as much as they can. They should have food of their choice from a selection of meals, instead of being given the exact same meal as everyone else as they may not like it. Also food to suit their culture/religion for example halaal meat, or no meat at all. The time they eat as no one should be forced to eat if they are not hungry or if it is too late or early for them to eat during that day, the amount of time they have to consume their meal as every person has a different way of eating whether they eat very fast or take their time, especially old people should be given a suitable amount of time to eat their meal as they will feel comfortable and respected. In Care Homes they should also have a range of good equipment for old people to use …show more content…
whilst eating because there may be one or a few of them that might not be able to manage eating in a tidy manner and should then be given the right equipment to use that will help them and make things easier for them. Also to avoid stereotyping and discrimination the patients should have a choice whether they would like to eat in a room with others or have their own space and eat in their own room as people like to have a suitable environment to themselves.
Personal Care (Hygiene)
Workers in Care Homes should also make the patients choose if they would want to have a bath or shower because some people choose one of the two to use depending on their mood and if they want to relax, it would not be fair to the person being bathed if they did not get any option as they may have a reason and may not feel comfortable. They should also have a choice of which shower gel or bubble bath to be used because they have different scents and someone might not like the smell they are being washed in, the same goes for anti-perspirants, perfumes, aftershave or creams as it will stay on them for a while, also as a patient may have an allergy to an ingredient added into something that has been used on their skin and will suffer from an allergic reaction. Mainly the temperature of water that they are going to bathe in would have to be of their choice as it is possible that it can be too hot or cold and will not make the patient feel comfortable during their bathing period. The equipment that will be used on them must be their own and clean as it can lead to a dangerous situation such as a person becoming ill or any other incident that may not have been their fault.
Clothes
When it comes to clothes, the ways to avoid discrimination and stereotyping towards patients are to make sure they wear their own clothes at all times as they can then become ill and it is unhygienic for people to share clothing because it might be dirty and can cause a reaction to sensitive skin.
In Care Homes it is also important for patients to choose what they would like to wear during that day to make them feel comfortable and happy also they may feel as if they are being able to have their say in something, the same goes for their hair, everyone has a different opinion when it comes to things and in the Care Home it would be well respected if an old person wanted their hair in a certain style, or to be combed or brushed, and it had been done for them to their satisfaction. If someone in the home has a religion where they have to have their hair done in a certain way, they should be listened to and instruct the carer as that will be respectful and will help them if they cannot manage to do it

Interpreter
In the Care Home there should be interpreters that speak multiple languages to help anyone that cannot understand or speak the language being used in the household, Braille for the blind as it will be a lot easier with it around to help as a blind person will not be able to manage in such a big environment without any help or Braille to read what they may be doing. Another way to avoid stereotyping and discrimination in Care Homes is to respect different religions/faiths that people have as they are following the rules provided to their faith and they should be followed regularly.
