SFCs - I talked with 1SG this morning about the plan for remedial PT. He wants SFC Wentzel to be overall in charge of the remedial PT program. SFC Wentzel does not need to run it. It is the reasonability of the duty platoon to run it. Each platoon will have two E5 on a duty appointment and they will run it. SFC Wentzel would be able to change the E5s plan as he sees needed.…

When he arrived back home, Beckwith presented a detailed report outlining the Army’s vulnerability in not having an SAS-type unit of its own. He submitted and re-submitted his report for several years, but was repeatedly thwarted in his efforts. The Colonel then turned his attention to reforming Green Beret training. He instituted practical training standards that would lend themselves to the birth of the modern Q-course.…

Jim Frederick’s book “Black Hearts” explores the harrowing account of soldiers from 1st Platoon, Bravo Company, 502nd Infantry Regiment during their deployment in 2005-2006 through Iraq’s “Triangle of Death”. The story is one of failed leadership at all levels, resulting in broken bonds between brothers, drug abuse, and ultimately the rape and murder of an Iraqi family. The soldiers’ descent into complete isolation was brought on by not only dire combat situations, but also a complete disregard for their mental health by higher. This essay will compare and contrast the roles of SSG Eric Lauzier and SFC Jeff Fenlason, and how their leadership had a positive or negative effect on their subordinates.…
Corporal T. J. Doherty, Drill Instructor of Platoon 984, was a great example of the importance of preparedness. For eight weeks of boot camp Corporal Doherty required the men to march on the beach in the sand, making it harder and more strenuous for them. Unlike other corporals and generals, Doherty does not engage in negative mental and psychological abuse. Corporal Doherty the highest level of performance from the men at the weakest times, for example, during their sleep schedules he would awaken them and demand unplanned hikes and exercise rituals. He made sure to train the men while they were sleep deprived and utterly exhausted. He also showed great attention to safety and weapons training. Sledge then went on to train for a few more months in infantry training school. Although this training not as stressful, it was equally demanding and intense. After this training was complete, Sledge was deployed to Pavuvu and received additional training that seemed pointless. All of this training was called upon when the United States invaded Peleliu. Other soldiers who had not completed this training or were pulled out of training early for battle were soon regretful. They did not last and were not as well equipped with skills to survive in battle. Some were even killed before their paperwork was processed. Sledge and others who had plentiful and adequate training held steadfast and fought an honorable…
The author really shows the importance of the lessons we learned in boot camp and OCS as the basis of what is needed to accomplish any mission. The author validates these assumptions as he goes back to what we learned in training as examples of how we should carry ourselves as leaders and Marines.…
During that time he served nine years as a basic training drill instructor and then later as a senior drill sergeant, having graduated in the top 10% of his drill sergeant class. During his assignments as a drill instructor, FAM Randles trained thousands of soldiers with no reported injuries. Many of his platoons were selected as the company honor platoon. As a senior drill sergeant, FAM Randles supervised two active duty drill instructors. From 2005-2006, FAM Randles supervised the basic rifle marksmanship course, where he supervised 30 soldiers and 20 civilian. During 2008, FAM Randles was selected to manage the convoy live fire range at Fort Benning, Georgia, which was considered the highest risk range on the installation. FAM Randles developed and managed a physical fitness program for the US Army Human Resources Command in Washington, D.C. This program improved fitness scores by 50%. Although FAM Randles has extensive military training experience, he understands the difference between a law enforcement training environment and a military training environment, with their many…

As an SGM, using this skill to get your Soldiers minds focused so they can remain focused on the task is critical. For example, if one of your Soldiers receives upsetting information before the first formation it is your responsibility to get him focused so he/she can concentrate on physical readiness training. Utilizing sentences starters to focus the Soldier again, for instance, “A more optimistic way of seeing this is” (MRT, 2014, p. 128). Your actions might be enough, but you should as the SGM, check back in with your Soldier to ensure your Soldier is all right or if you can offer any other…
