Scarce Resources
There are numerous reasons for the nursing shortage nationwide. Perhaps one of the most influential reasons is related to the scarcity of resources that include nursing faculty. A decreased nursing force can be directly correlated with the declining number of nursing faculty available. Multiple factors including lack of interest in becoming nursing faculty, lack of funding, noncompetitive salaries, aging faculty, and global migration of nurses affect the nursing faculty shortage. If left unsolved, the issue of a scarce and diminishing nursing faculty will result in a larger nursing shortage. With the endless possibilities of roles nurses can take on, there is less interest in becoming a nurse faculty member. This is mainly attributed to the routine nature of the job. In the beginning, it is new and challenging but after a while it becomes ritualistic in terms of teaching and grading material.
Advanced practice nurses are looking for places where they can grow and be stimulated (Cowen & Moorhead, 2011). It is essential that funding be allocated to restoring old and new nursing programs. Nursing programs must be able to provide up to date education to current and future nurses. Without appropriate funding, this cannot happen. This economic investment from the government can help address the nursing shortages experienced throughout the United States. The New York state nursing shortage correction act, attempts to increase funding to nursing educational facilities by providing funding to educational institutions, expansion of nursing faculty, creation of simulation labs for new and existing nursing programs, broaden clinical and academic partnerships, increase availability of Internet based learning, and provide incentives for retiring nurses to continue working (S. 2270, 2013). These funds are collected through state and federal taxes. It is everyone’s responsibility to contribute as we all use and benefit from the health care system. The inclusion of lay people also ensures they are aware of issues within the health care system and can participate in the solution creating
