The Details:
1. Portfolio Retrospective Essay
The Portfolio Retrospective Essay is an essay of about 3 pages that gives you a chance to reflect on your experience in the course thus far. Its intent is to help readers see the degree to which you see yourself making progress on the W131 course goals. Composing the Essay: The best place to begin composing the essay is to fill out the “Retrospective Planning Form.” This form lists the course goals and invites you to indicate what work on the paper you are choosing is helping you to make progress on each goal. Filling out the form will give you content for the Portfolio Retrospective Essay. When you write the essay, keep the following in mind:

2. Review the semester thus far and discuss the ways the work in the course has helped you to make progress on the course’s six goals. Then, discuss how you have grown as a writer because of this work.
3. As you plan the essay, consider the kinds of writing strengths you have gained thus far in the semester and what has led to these strengths. In addition, consider the weaknesses you have noticed in your writing or your writing process.
4. Most importantly: Use what appears in the portfolio to illustrate the statements you make about yourself as a writer, your growth, and your experience in the course.
5. Close the essay in a way that naturally follows from what you say in its body. One productive approach would be to review the statements of growth you mention in the body and to discuss the ways you are thinking of trying to address the weaknesses you have identified
