School Board Meeting Reflection
Across each district monthly school board meetings are held to discuss different issues within the community and schools. The school board members discuss items such as budget, employee contracts, academic services, school choice, teacher and student conduct, etc. Locally elected school board members are responsible for discussing and voting towards the decisions that impact educators, students, and our community. I feel that it important for community members to attend school board meetings because during these meetings parents teachers, and other community members are provided with an opportunity to voice their opinions and concerns on topics. I was able to watch my districts school board meeting for the month of August and a few topics that were discussed include school name changes, discipline, student code of conduct, etc.
The different topics discussed in the August meeting had political ramifications that can and are affecting our schools and community. Although many political topics were discussed I was amazed at the depth of discussion amongst school board members on changing the language of self-defense in the student code of conduct. This political topic is one that I would

I would be upset if my child were to come home and say they were attacked and did nothing to defend them-selves, although I raised them to use self-defense. “Sometimes decisions are not made in the best interest of the children but rather are those that upset the fewest number of vocal stakeholders” (Lindle, n.d., p.63). With that being said although it was changing the language of self-defense did not pass I believe this issue needs to be further discussed to provide students with their rights and a clear definition for “reasonable”

I have never been to a school board meeting before, so I am not entirely sure what to expect. I know it is an open meeting, so I am sure there will be several parents of students in the district as well as citizens of area that will be affected by decisions made by the school board. In terms of the agenda, the board will undoubtedly discuss future school functions and the associated budgets, as well as personnel matters. This is a policy-making meeting so I do not expect there to be much input from the audience other than possible questions or concerns. Hopefully the board will address the agenda in an efficient and time effective manor and all disputes will be put to rest.…

Many people, including the state governor of New Jersey Chris Christie, believe that having firearms on school campuses will be nothing but a disturbance to both students and teachers. "I am not someone who believes that having multiple armed guards in every school is something that will enhance the learning environment,” he explained, "you don't want to make this an armed camp for kids."(Portnoy) This is the most valid argument for the opposition of armed guards in schools because kids/students are the main focus of the issue. One of the most important things regarding education is whether students are able to go to school in environment where they feel safe. In some situations many students may be uneasy in the presence for firearms where they will simply be a distraction. But there are times when extreme situations call for extreme measures, and the protection of students across the nation calls requires extreme measures. Superintendent MaryEllen Elia of the Hillsborough County Public Schools in Florida said in a release to the lobby, “Let me tell you that I wish this wasn’t necessary. I wish we didn’t have to consider any of these strategies but the world has changed since I was in school. It changed again on December 14th.”(Byrd) Placing armed guards in schools is an action that people across the board are opposed to, but even Elia believes “We have a role and a responsibility.” that we should not “wait around hoping our students and staff are safe.” (Byrd) By reacting to the killings that have taken place across the nation Florida and many other states are taking steps in preventing more lives being…

One thing that has been happening in schools is open fire, killing and wounding others weather that is the teachers or students. Tragedies like these are some of our worst fears no one would ever want to be stuck in the middle of a school shooting. So let's stop this from happening with giving teacher the rights to carry concealed weapons. The reasons we are going to let this is happen is because teachers will be prepared for an incident to happen, some people live to far away and it would take a long time before the police get there, students are going to feel more safe knowing that their teachers are armed.…

Campuses grow more vulnerable every day as the nation continues on its downward spiral. Since 2010, the country has witnessed over a hundred shootings committed on school campuses. Shootings on school grounds, whether it is an elementary or post graduate school is far from a new concept. During the 1990s’ Congress implemented multiple Gun Free School Zone Acts for federally funded schools to help create safer school zones by preventing any gun related violence. The problem being that the gun free school zones act only designates distances that keep law abiding citizens defenseless, while any potential criminal has a safe haven to commit their crime with no fear of initial response. Every certified…
