School Dress Code

December 6 2007 Title: In all schools over the United States students are fighting over clothing. Some children have no respect for themselves when it comes to what they are wearing. They dress like it is a night club or like they are out on a nice sunny day at the beach. This is not appealing to everyone. This is one reason why many schools have gone to school dress codes or uniforms. Dress codes help prevent fighting, many unwanted distraction, and embarrassing moments for students. Uniforms also help decrease the number of thieves in school. In Long Beach, California the school district has made it mandatory for all kids in k-8 grade to wear school dress codes. Fifty-six elementary school and 14 middle schools were involved in this mandatory school uniform policy that was set in the fall of 1994. A year after the uniform policy was set the assault and battery cases dropped 34 percent, physical fights dropped 51 percent, and school suspensions rate dropped 32 percent (Portner21). Many children who cannot afford the nicer things in life often steal to have them. It can also help with children not falling into peer pressure from their friends. They can concentrate more on their school work and not on everyone else. One advantage to having school dress codes is allowing teacher and facility to identify an intruder. Even though people do not understand dress codes, they help stop many types of violence, academic distraction, and racial comments in all schools; therefore, I think that school should emplace dress codes to help our children. Even though some fights are over a boy or girl, some are over having nice things, or even how someone cannot afford to have the privilege of the nicer things in life. Many students do not think about how people are different in all ways. Some people work hard their whole life and have nothing to show for it, while others have everything to show for it. When

School uniforms, are they a burden to families in the United States, or are they preventing students form the hardships of being bullied? In a case of a low income family, uniforms are a better choice. Uniforms not only keep a school in order and prevent provocative clothing, but hide a student’s backgrounds from being manipulated by everyday bullies. School uniforms should be enforced in several schools because they teach students professionalism, will encourage teamwork and success in school, and prevent sexual harassment in schools and at home.…

Public schools across the United States have been dealing with the issue of dress codes. As of 2008, twenty-two U.S. states specifically authorized schools to institute dress codes or uniform policies (8). School boards may generally create and enforce dress code, but they must do so without violating students’ constitutional law (9). Schools are finding difficulty in enforcing their dress code among students. Parents feel as if the schools dress codes are condoning their students for expressing themselves and say that it is unconstitutional and wrong. Parents, students, and administrators all have the idea of uniforms in the back of their mind but, they will have to give up things to have them. Though a dress code for high schools students is appropriate, uniforms would be a better option.…

Since the days of the Puritans, laws and rules have been made concerning what is moral, or safe and best for society. Although dress codes are increasing in popularity throughout the United States, educators do not uniformly agree upon the benefits produced by these regulations (king, 1998). There is no certainty that dress codes reduce school violence or improve academic achievement. Furthermore, strict dress codes, which school officials justify because they are aimed at preventing gang violence, have been adopted in several areas that do not have gang problems, undermining some school official's justifications (Wilson, 1998).…

Dress codes are common across the nation in both large and small schools. However, they are often disputed by students for being suppressive and discriminatory. Applying dress codes to schools has been proven to deter violence. But if schools go beyond preventing violence, they can start something highly controversial. Reforming or eliminating dress codes would create a healthy and educational environment for…

    High School Dress Codes

In Classical High School, a boy and girl are sat beside each other. Both learning. Both participating in class. Both wearing sleeveless shirts. The principal happens to walk in and asks the girl to step out of the class to speak. The girl ends up getting sent home for distracting the class. Dazed and confused, the girl asks why and the principal responds with “your shirt is distracting the boys”. Is this insulting to boys saying they get distracted by foolish things like a shoulder? Or an insult to girls making them seem like they are just sex objects that need to cover up for others sake. Many public high schools have extremely sexist dress codes. Not only is this not equal, but also keeps alive rape culture by saying girls are sluts for having shorts not reaching their fingertips. Sexist standards…

As a girl, I think the dress code is pretty fair. I really don't believe we want to wear short shorts and mini skirts and spaghetti straps, I think we just want to just look impressive. I think it's perfectly fine for us to wear t-shirts and jeans, because we don't need to wear holey jeans and low shirts. It's not much of a problem for guys, they don't barely even care what they wear. But on the other hand, girls care much more about their appearance. I think the dress code is a bit unfair to high schoolers, because they are able to wear more of what they want in their older age, but in middle school, I think it's fine. I mean, we don't want all the little 10 and 11 year old kids looking up to 13 year olds with skimpy clothing, it's just a bad role model for them. But I kind of don't understand what the whole spaghetti strap thing is about.…

I believe that everyone living in the United States has had their privacy invaded or freedom taken from them more than once, whether intentionally or accidentally, but it has been a greater issue still to the female population in certain cases, such as those who have been forced to submit to the unjust rules of school dress codes across the nation. Strict dress codes constrict any form of creativity for students to express themselves or reflect who they are through their garments. In one case in Woodford County, Kentucky a mother had to be pulled out of her job to go to the school and find that her daughter was in trouble for showing her collarbones.…

When a girl gets told that her outfit is unsuitable to wear to school, her self esteem is dismantled from her. (Kate) In recent years, multiple girls have been punished because of the way they dress while attending school. Dress codes have taken a toll on how girls think about themselves as a person and the way they dress because of the fact that they might have to change due their outfit being “inappropriate.” Public schools should enforce dress codes but they should not be so strict so they do not embarrass children, body shame students, or push sexism toward one gender or another.…

As we all know, the seasons change year round, but we experience most of these weather changes during school. Summer to fall is the beginning of a new school year, as spring to summer is the ending of the school year. With the temperature changes during these seasons, they seem cause havoc in high schools, sometimes even in middle schools. Most people celebrate the weather change from winter to summer, yet teenage girls seem to dread this change because high schools treat dress codes like a “23-19” from Monsters’ Inc. Yet we constantly only see schools directing this dress code majorly at girls; when have we heard of a boy being sent home for his pants being too low? Never. Which is why many see reevaluating the dress code in public schools…

The following essay will examine what school dress codes are and why many schools are now slowly moving this policy into there schools. School dress codes are set policies enforced by the school or school districts, by making a student wear a certain type of clothing or one basic type such as a uniform. Dress codes in schools began as early as the 50’s and 60’s when schools were on a campaign to curb “juvenile delinquency”. Juvenile delinquency refers to either violent or non-violent crime committed by persons who are under the age of eighteen and are still considered to be a minor. In the 80’s, gang activity was growing in schools, which led officials to reexamine their dress code, and for the first time considered a uniform. In 1987 a Baltimore, Maryland school, Cherry Hill Elementary, became the first public school to have adopted uniforms. Uniforms were later followed by Long Beach Unified School District in 1994 to become the first full district to adopt a uniform dress code policy.…
