School Lunches In The 1950's
This article was about a study done on school lunch practices in typical schools. Some of the results were shocking, while others were what was expected. I wasn’t sure if in the 1950’s schools served lunch, but I came to find out that a lot of schools did. Sanitary efforts in the 1950s compared to now were very low and not monitored as much as today. Many insanitary practices were reported. The most prominent thing found was contaminated food. Many children were getting sick of things such as typhoid, Salmonella, and shigellosis. Employees were practicing poor sanitation such as not washing their hands or leaving food out increasing sickness in children. The American School Health Association, a quasi-governmental organization, sent questionnaires …show more content…
Different size elementary, middle, and high schools from all over the United States were included in the survey. Most of the schools were public and their lunches were of the complete type (federal type A or equivalent). The findings of some of the questions are shocking. One questions was, “Is running hot water available?” The majority of schools said yes, but there were still a lot of schools that said no. You would think that having hot water would be mandatory. The schools were then asked to indicate dishwashing methods used. The majority reported back that they used a machine with one or two compartments. Another large number used one or two sink compartments for washing and sanitizing. Only half used glass or plastic shields to cover displays and the other half didn’t. It is important to have protective devices to …show more content…
During that time, many things were going on in the United States. According to the History Channel, rock-n-roll was on the rise, desegregation of schools were starting, rise of the cold war, and the average family income was just $3200 per year. Little girls were getting Barbies, Elvis was on the rise, and the United States added Alaska and Hawaii. The United States held the military power. Its economy was thriving, and new cars, suburban houses and other goods were available to more people than ever before (History.com Staff, 2010). The United States was really picking up and problems in schools was getting better, but there were still a lot of improvements to

soap and water. In this class I observed that the teacher did not use soap in washing the hands of children after lunch. Additionally, there was a need of consistency in wiping and washing child’s hands and teacher’s hands after diapering. Furthermore, hand-washing for children upon arrival should be practiced everyday. During my observation, one toddler was able to go outdoor unnoticed by any one of the teachers, so for safety practices teachers should always see to it the all doors are locked to keep the children safe all the time.…

Health is extremely important in our lives and the health of our children will be taken very seriously. To maintain a healthy environment, I will conduct daily inspections to check for any signs of illness. Parents will be encouraged to keep sick children at home to prevent the possibility of spreading illnesses. To keep young infants healthy, staff will be required to wear disposable gloves while changing diapers, wiping noses and while serving food. Employees and children alike will be constantly reminded to wash their hands thoroughly throughout the day. A clean and healthy environment is a must.…

My goal in this functional area is to help my students stay healthy as possible by doing my best to limit the number of germs my students come into contact with during the day as well as teaching children healthy habits. Ensuring a child’s health is important because children who are not healthy do not to benefit from the childcare program they are in or the learning opportunities they are presented with. So in order to ensure children's health I plan on teaching children when to wash their hands, the correct way of washing their hands and why it is so important. I plan on making sure my students wash their hands after using the restroom and sneezing or coughing into their hands. I also plan on complying with my daycares exclusion policy and excluding any sick children from class to keep them from spreading germs to other students. I plan on…

Recently there has been revisions to the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and schools were required to overhaul their entire menus to provide the students with healthy and nutritious foods including fruits and vegetables. The new school lunch rules are part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 which has been implemented this fall. (Post Standard) The Hunger Act allows the USDA the opportunity to make reforms to the school lunch and breakfast programs. With these revisions come strict guidelines from the federal government that each school district must follow in order to receive funding and reimbursement (National School Lunch Program, 2012, August p. 1). In this essay i will be comparing the positive and negative effects of these recent revisions to the NSLP. I will then discuss whether or not these changes are beneficial to the children receiving the meal and whether NSLP is leaving children hungry or helping children make healthy food choices.…

The main idea of the article "When there's no school lunch in St. Louis, food vans help fill the gap" by Allison Colburn, is about how kids don’t get enough to eat when school is out and a group of people want to help the families by delivering food to their kids. "Schaefer said the idea was for children to associate the van with fun and play". This shows that the group is trying to make delivering food more fun for the kids that eat it. "When school isn’t in session, access to nutritious meals may become difficult for children in low-income families." This shows that the group is trying to help so kids don’t starve in the non-school months.…

It is a YouTube sensation. A video made by high school teens titled We Are Hungry is an exaggerated but necessary cry for a change. In the tune of hit song We Are Young the video depicts teens falling asleep during class and slumping to the floor during sports practices. As silly as the video gets at times it boils down to one thing. There needs to be a change. School lunches need to have more calories and bigger portions to support the growing bodies of the children and teens eating them.…

During my observations, I had the opportunity to interview the director of the facility. We discussed risk and injury prevention practices within the classroom, how prevention is managed, how it is approved, and lastly, if there are any modifications being made in the environment in relation to the children’s needs and developmental levels. The director told me all the employees meet once a month to discuss solutions. She mentioned that there are fire drills every thirty days. The director said she makes observations of the teachers every thirty days to observe and see if the teacher is participating in risk and injury prevention practices. Each teacher used electrical outlet covers. All chemicals are out of reach of children. The medication…
