Over the past 10 the 15 years we have seen an increase in school shootings. As a police officer these attacks have changed the way police respond to school shootings and how they handle their schools security in their areas. As a parent of a child that is in elementary school, these school shootings are extremely alarming and frightening. As I’ve already stated I have two interests in this area. The first being that I am a police officer and the second one being that I am a parent of a child that is in elementary school. Back in 2002 I worked as a school resource officer in a local high school and junior high. It was my job to make sure that the
students and faculty were safe. It was also my job to make sure that the building was secure in that I educate the teachers and other faculty on how to prevent an incident such as Columbine or Virginia Tech. I have also been to several training seminars about school shootings and other training courses on how to identify and stop these incidents in their tracks before they ever occur. I have also helped train several schools in my area on how to take down an arm subject without using a firearm to help stop the threat. I feel like I can be a great asset to many schools and even industries on how to help prevent these attacks from occurring on their premises. Protection and prevention can go a long way. In conclusion, it is very important that we research the ways to help identify and examine how we can prevent these horrific incidents from ever occurring and examine the past incidents so we can search for patterns and other important clues. We must secure our children’s existence in the future by protecting our children today.
