This took place at Taft Union High School near Bakersfield, California. This school shooting started because the student was a victim of bullying and he wanted revenge. The student came to school and shot one student and missed another. He called the student who was bullying him, and the came out of hiding and apologized, but the teacher, Ryan Heber, interrupted and he came face to face with the 16- year-old student, who was armed. Heber wasn’t sure with this if the student was either, going to put the weapon down or continue shooting. While the student was distracted, Supervisor Kim Fields took the rest of the students so they could escape. Finally, the shooter surrendered and the police took the student into custody. Friday, the next day, school was cancelled due to the situation, but counseling sessions were held that morning for teachers or students who wished to attend. Before Heber spoke to the shooter, the student who was shot in the process was in a critical, yet a stable condition. Kern County Sheriff, Donny Youngblood said “The name of the student wasn’t released, and is debating whether he will be charged as an adult or not.” KDET reported “Heber is a well-known and liked science teacher and was a graduate at Taft and with the situation the Heber family will be there for him with emotional support.” The Taft shooting was the latest school shooting in the U.S., and it launched a big debate whether teachers should carry weapons to protect themselves and others in case of another shooting. Immediately after the shooting, parents went to the school to pick up their children and express concern about the school security. A parent reported “We’re going to protect our students a lot more, and it goes to show that there is one bad apple out there.”…
Sam Granillo was you average high school junior with a successful life ahead of him, until one day he found himself barricaded in a small office, his body blocking the door from opening. The other side of the wall was a war; gunfire, death, and shooters in his high school. This rampage was the Columbine High School shooting. 20 year old Male Adam Peter Lanza fatally shot twenty children and six adult staff members in a mass murder at the Sandy Hook Elementary school in the village of Sandy Hook in Newton, Connecticut. On my quest to look up information on this perpetrator Adam Peter Lanza - (April 22, 1992- December 14,2012) it is stated on wikipedia .com that Adam and his mother Nancy Lanza age 52, lived in sandy Hook, 5miles (8km) from the Elementary school. Adam did not have any criminal background with the police and he also attended sandy hook for a brief time back in his day, but he mostly attended St. Rose Catholic school in Newtown, and then attended Newtown High…
I remember sitting in my second grade class on September 11th 2001, watching the news and not understanding what was going on. Our principal was walking in and out of each classroom making sure all of the students as well as teachers were remaining calm. While people often equate 9-11 with the downward spiral of the world, such disasters have been occurring long before this horrific event. Since 1980 there has been no substantial increase in the amount of overall mass murders and killing sprees in the United States (Plumer); however the number of killings in schools has rapidly increased in the past two years. Although it is not…
On December 14, 2012 in Newtown, Connecticut, the day had started out as any normal school day at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Until raging twenty year old, Adam Lanza, simply walked right through the front door killing twenty-six people. The Sandy Hook shooting on December 14 devastated many parents, children, and even people that were not linked at all to the shooting. There have been plenty of devastating school shootings, but this shooting has caused many schools and even businesses to crack down on their security and take more precautions to ensure that something like this does not happen again. It even caused the president to question the second amendment and even try to repeal it. This has caused tons of controversy in America.…

On the noon of April 20th, 1999 America’s deadliest school shooting had just ended with the suicide of its two gunmen. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold had just murdered twelve students, one teacher, and injured twenty-one since they began their shooting spree forty minutes earlier in the city of Littleton, Colorado. The media coverage of the Columbine High School massacre made this event have a tremendous impact on the people of the United States, inducing fear of all outcasts in schools, and creating an insatiable thirst for answers. Soon, there was a large amount of misinformation, but it took years before people knew why it happened. The events leading to the Columbine High School massacre have become important clues to look for in order to…
Many people think they are safe when they are inside school, which should be the case but sadly it is not. Over forty school shootings have happened within one year. School shootings have been a constant problem for our nation, in order to protect all of us, we need to create a dynamic solution.…
School shootings are terrifying to think about, but there are ways to help prevent the massacres from ever happening again. The first known school shooting was at the Texas Tower at the University of Texas in 1966 where Charles Whitman shot and killed 16 people while injuring 31 others. Who would have known since that date that we would have more then 200 deaths on school campuses? The most storied shooting in the 90’s was probably the Columbine massacre where on April 20, 1999 Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris killed 32 students and faculty before turning the guns on themselves. The horror scene from the day will always be remembered in many lives and will continue over the years. There were many other horrible shootings over the years as well almost too many to count but here lately the latest mascaras that have happened have been on college campuses at Virginia Tech University where 33 lives were lost and Northern Illinois where 5 lives were lost. After all these years and all the lives lost it’s time that the school massacres with many lives lost come to an end.…
There has been a huge rise of school shootings in the last few years. Just in single school year there was about 336 gunshots at a DC school district (“School Shootings”). How is that even possible that so much shootings can occur. There were also shootings in colleges and high schools. Most of this shootings occurring in schools are on the Eastern Coast. In a map shown on “School Shootings in America since 2013” you can see there is a higher rate on that side of the country than any of the others. Decreasing all these school shootings would have a huge impact on everyone. It would make every parent feel safe about sending their kids to school knowing that their kids will be okay and come home safe. In the article “Analysis of School Shootings” there was 160 in at least between 2013-2015. There were 84 shootings in K-12 and 76 in college or university settings. That was across 38 states in the United states. That is way too much and that was all over the U.S. a few more states and it would have been in every single state. There have been some school shootings that have really impacted not just families but the whole country. For example, the Sandy Hook shooting was one that had the biggest impact. That was one of the deadliest school shootings in history. We as a country have to work together to decrease all these fatal shootings killing innocent children. Banning guns would be the main source in decreasing school…
It affects our schools, our communities, our relationships, and our health. February 14th, 2018 marked the 17th school shooting in 2018 alone. Less than 3 months into the new year, and unlimited fear has been unleashed into the hearts of all parents and students. "Blood is being spilled on the floors of American classrooms, and that is not acceptable…" (Washington Post, 1). A senior in high school, David Hogg, was able to do speak better on behalf of the students then our lawmakers can.…
In America, people have the rights to keep and bear arms. Parents also have the right as to how they would like to raise their children and how they want to inform them. Americans, also have the right to own guns for their own self-defense. Some people view these ideas in collaboration, and others view these ideas in contradiction. Parents who let their children shoot guns are not bad parents because they are letting their children have some independence and are making them aware of guns and their risks. Even though gun violence is getting very serious in America, children should be able to shoot guns, and nobody should be able to take that away from them.…
One of the most effective way to prevent school massive shooting is to improve the…
After a tragedy has occurred, it becomes next to impossible. Most students returning after a shooting or other act of violence, feel out of place and overwhelmed. Gervich (2007) went on to explain that “I have the option of doing the remaining work over the summer, but even if I wanted to complete my assignments, I could not. I find it nearly impossible to concentrate these days, and when I can, it is only on the shootings” (p.42). The most important task after a school shooting is returning to a state of normalcy. Fear and anxiety will be present; that is unavoidable, but the longer students keep fearing school the smaller the chance of them returning. If students who were once on the right track and moving ahead with their studies, a tragedy such as a shooting can reverse everything they have achieved. The aftermath of any tragedy is devastating. The feeling of accomplishment, motivation and drive will vanish, leaving students unsure of their purpose. This is a dangerous as the more school shootings, the more victims there will be. Down the road, what will be the results? School should never be a place that is feared. Students should have the right to seek out an education and go as far as they want without a constant fear standing in the…
