Gun violence in America is not at all as bad as it is in Sierra Leone and other countries with war and little law enforcement as we read about in the book a long way gone. In the book the main character Ishmael discovers that America is not at all like he heard through rap songs. When he moves to America and tells his story of being a soldier and killing people the people he talks to about it think that it is cool and Ishmael states in the book “violence in America is romanticized. I do agree with this statement that we do make war look easy and fun through movies and video games. We do not understand what it is like to be in a war and witness killing and bloodshed every day.…
Seeing the mass shootings and gun violence issues at large gatherings that could have been prevented. Ed Cohan explores multiple different reasons about why gun laws should be made more strict. Ed Cohen utilizes examples to portray why America’s gun laws should be more strict. Cohen also explains how mass gun shootings could have been prevented if the gun laws were more strict.…
In other developed countries, guns aren’t as big a part of the culture as they are in the US. We have become so gun dependent, misusing and overusing the power, that some people don’t know when it is proper to use a gun. Bernhard Goetz was sitting on the subway, when four African-American boys came up to him asking for five dollars. Goetz felt he was being pressured, so he pulled out his gun and shot the lads (Sommers 117). Also, in 2001, ten percent of teens thought it was okay to shoot someone if they weren’t from your neighborhood or if you needed to in order to get what you wanted. In 2001, 28 percent of teens thought it was okay to fire at someone if they insult you (Sommers…
First of all, the old-fashioned values and morals we impose on our children today are depleting. The line between being moral and immoral is becoming very blurry. Teachers are supposed to be important role models to the students as they continue to develop both mentally and emotionally. This occurs throughout the different stages of their lives. However, if the person who is supposed to be the child’s educator and mentor is shown to be in support of guns, then the message that they are sending to the students will be negative. Having guns goes against the morals we teach the children everyday about the negativity of violence “ It’s saying the only answer to violence is more violence. The only answer to guns is more guns” (CBC) By having teachers use more guns, as an answer to more guns, it brings out that violence is the answer to the problem at hand.…
The scholarly article “Gun Shows and Gun Violence: Fatally Flawed Study Yields Misleading Results” first appeared in the magazine American Journal of Public Health in 2010. It was co-written by Garen Wintemute, David Hemenway, Daniel Webster, Glenn Pierce, and Anthony Braga. In their Journal entry they aim to convince their readers that the widely publicized case study “The Effect of Gun Shows on Gun-Related Deaths: Evidence from California and Texas” is a bunch of nonsense. “We believe the study is fatally flawed”. Toulmin’s Model, along with the three appeals to argument, are techniques frequently applied by the authors used to create their convincing argument.…
A controversial argument opposite to both viewpoints of gun control mentioned, is the negatives of guns and the need for gun control. In the article, “The Impact of Violence on Children,” Joy Osofsky elaborates that gun violence in communities are extremely detrimental in communities especially on children. Osofsky, a professor of public health in Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, uses masses of children psychology, scenarios and experiences to demonstrate the importance of gun control and to increase gun regulations. She focuses on children’s response to guns and violence, showing that the exposure of gun violence to children at their early ages not only increases their interest to use guns, but also the likelihood to use…
When a parent has a firearm in the house where it is easy to access… things need to change gun proofing your house is the most important and also knowing when to use to and how to is also very important. “gun proofing should be done and any parent with firearms should continue to educate their children and make sure that the responsibility of having a fire arm in the house is properly done” (journal Gazeite 1). Let’s change the subject a little bit, let’s talk about knowing the proper way to handle and control a firearm. “Children should never handle guns without adult supervision” (journal Gazette A9). If a child should come across a firearm they should do the responsible thing and not touch it or pick it up.…
On 5/7/17 at 0931 hours, I was dispatched to 9421 57th St N, in reference to a shooting that just occurred. Dispatch advised a subject named Prince is shot; he may have shot himself at this location. I responded to the scene with multiple other officers. Upon my arrival, I observed five individuals in the front yard screaming prince has been shot.…
Young kids don’t have the understanding that a gun can potentially kill or seriously injure someone. A great amount of kids involved in tragic accidents are too young. Most parents think they’re old enough to keep a gun around the house and believe they’re responsible enough to be given one, but they’re not. According to the Journal Gazette newspaper, the younger, the more curious a child is about guns. So, the more time and effort it will take to bring him or her to the point of understanding why it is so important not to handle guns without adult guidance. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Nearly 800 children under 14 years old were killed in gun accidents from 1999 to…
Everyone has their own opinion of everything, but one might have a different side. In the article, “Famous Speeches: "We call BS," Emma Gonzalez's speech to gun advocates”, the author of this article is Emma Gonzalez as it states in the article. In the article, “Issue Overview: Guns in America”, it states underneath the title that this article was produced by Bloomberg as it shows. Both article state their opinion about guns, but they never show the readers side about the subject because everyone has a different perspective about guns someone might like them and someone might not. In both articles they show how guns had been a problem for years and nobody has done anything about this problem. In addition, everyone has a different opinion about…
America is widely known for having a fascination with violence and is a “gun – happy” country. However, this love for firearms has led to tragedies untold and horrifying truths about the mental state of individuals as revealed in the Columbine School shooting incident. Major and minor causes collectively led up to this event and bring up the question of whether or not this tragedy could have been prevented. The NRA play a key part in the debate over gun control, and parents play a vital role in instilling future generations with respect for handguns and being involved in their lives. Though there is room to consider a grey area guns continue to be the instruments used to sow sorrow resulting…
Gun violence is one main thing that tears families apart. Crazy, non-educated people roam the streets with dangerous weapons killing people and causing tragedies. Society would have done better if only police had the access to weapons and guns instead of civilians and criminals, although they could be confiscated. Gun violence incidents have been happening for a very long time, most of the time without a reason. Shootings, robberies, etc. all include the use of a weapon like a gun. These things happen every day. For example, if someone is trying/planning on killing someone, they won’t be able to do that without a weapon. Guns are meant for self-defense, people like gangsters don’t use them the way they’re supposed to be used, but why? Using them not the right way will get them in trouble and do nothing but get them thrown in jail, just use guns in the proper form, for self-defense, not homicidal kills. It is important to always stay cautious of your…
Many people believe that there should be no lengthy process in obtaining a gun specifically because it diminishes their right of security. In more than half the United States it is legal for an honorable discharged veteran to carry a licensed firearm with no lengthy process. Others believe that it should be the same for the rest for the rest of America. The process for a veteran to acquire a gun only depends upon them to pass a criminal background check, accumulate a copy of their DD form stating you were discharged under an honorable status, as well as supply any type of identification with a photo for the license, and finally pay a license fee of one hundred and seventeen dollars for five years. Many people believe it should be the same for the rest of America. Given that the veteran has just been discharged from war, they too may have post traumatic stress…
health illnesses are the issue. Someone who wants a firearm is going to be able to find a way to retrieve a firearm, whether it is illegal or not. Instead of taking citizens’ rights away for a prohibition act that will not keep firearms out of the wrong hands anyways, the government should focus more on what issues cause gun violence.…
The first mass shooting was in Austin, Texas in 1966 by Charles Whitman at the University of Texas. He snipped fourteen people and wounded thirty-two others in less than ninety minutes. Students used their weapons from their vehicles and helped police take him down. Democratic parties are scared to bring up the topic of gun control because they fear that they will lose votes to the people that do not want gun control. Gun laws are intended to limit the amount of guns in an area and lower crime rates, but people with mental problems do not follow those rules. They set their minds on killing people and that is what they do. If gun control became stricter, then there would still be gun violence because criminals would be armed making unarmed citizens easy targets. No one can stop them because they are set on killing no matter what. They do not have to suffer the consequences of killing the people they do because most of them kill themselves when they are about to get caught or after they finish what they planned to do.…
