School Start Later Essay
Many students across the U.S. are complaining because they need more sleep. There is an easy answer to this and a harder answer that would cost more money. The easy answer is go to sleep earlier. The harder answer would be to change school start times. I believe that we should just go to sleep earlier. This is because we would not have to change schedules, Students aren´t guaranteed to go to sleep at the same time , and after school activities would not have to go into the night. Firstly, changing the school start time would cause schedules to have to change. As Justin O'neill says in his article ¨should schools start later?¨ ¨School bus schedules are arranged not just the needs of not just one school but all the schools in a district...¨ …show more content…
If we were to change start times we would also have to change the stop time. When the extra-curricular activities go later into the night athletes may get tired during practice. Sarah Mckibben´s article also says ¨⅔ of high school students get less than 7 hours of sleep¨ This may not change for some students with extracurricular activities. The homework would also have to be done later in the night. I agree that teens need more sleep, however, I also believe that Changing start times isn't the way to get more sleep. According to Terra Ziporyn Snider, executive director of the national coalition Start School Later, the issue is a ¨political hot potato¨ For several good reasons this is true. There would be much money spent on something we are not even sure would help. And also some bus drivers would have to move. And those aren't all the reasons. while there may be reason to change the start times I believe that some of the benefits are trivial. The main reasons we should keep the start times are that we would have to change many schedules, teens may just go to sleep later, and the extracurricular activities would go later. These are the main reasons but there are still many other reasons. When it comes down to it I believe we should keep the same start

In the article “Our kids need more sleep” Written by Valerie Erde, she makes many good points about why school should be set back to a later time. First is how it increases academic alertness and vigilance. Second, is how a later start time decreases depression in teens and decreases tardiness and decreases truancy. Last, is how this later start time is actually helping the students get better grades. I one hundred percent agree with this and believe these policies should definitely be implemented.…

Of all the things high school students complain about, being sleep deprived and tired ranks first as most problematic. The issue isn’t that kids simply choose not to get enough sleep; it is that the majority genuinely cannot. Students are constantly being badgered by parents, doctors and school faculty to get at least eight hours of sleep, but with school starting as early as 7:20, that makes getting a decent amount of sleep an almost impossible task. Though there are numerous other reasons as to why students are lacking sleep, the start time of school is ultimately the main contributor and leads to many severely negative results. A policy causing high schools to start at 8:30 instead would greatly improve the number of better rested students.…

“42 states reported that most (75%-100%) public schools started before 8:30 a.m” (“Schools Start Too Early”). Most schools start before 8:30. A decent amount of schools start around 7:20. Schools start early in the day and release later in the afternoon. This has become routine, but studies show that students who start early in the day perform worse in school compared to those who start later in the day. Schools should implement a later start time for higher schoolers since high schoolers would get around the recommended amount of sleep, preventing sleeping in school and high schoolers academics and safety will increase, since they will get enough sleep to study before school and prevent drowsiness.…

Most of the time when students start earlier they are just exhausted, and on top of that, teachers cram their brains with information and pile them with homework. On average, students in school should range from about eight to eleven hours of sleep a night. By starting school later, it would help the students’ brain to recover from the required amount of sleep to stay healthy and energized up for a new day. Students who start later and end at the same time as usual would still be rested up and still have the energy to be able to do any out of school activities that would be great for a resume or just for personal hobbies.…

This is explained by Holohan “Starting the school day earlier may lead to more car accidents involving teenagers, new research suggests. ”(Holohan). So if schools have early start times they are putting not only the children in danger they are also putting the other citizens of the city in danger. The starting times will also affect their lives later on as described by “Wake up”Insufficient sleep in teens is associated with obesity, migraines, and immune system disruption and with health risk behaviors, including smoking, drinking, stimulant abuse, physical fighting, physical inactivity, depression, and suicidal tendencies(“Wake up”)With studies like these schools really need to start paying attention because if the start times are affecting this many things than schools are doing more bad than they are good. This also affects out of school activities which is explained by Edwards “Activities such as sports and work, along with family and social schedules, may make it difficult for students to adjust the time they go to bed.…

One reason school start times should be later than they are now is because junior high and high school students are “programmed” to stay up late and sleep in. During teenage years, students bodies are designed to stay up later and sleep in. Both When Sleep Becomes A Nightmare, an article written by Scholastic, and the National Sleep Foundation website agree with just that! Nancy Shute, an award-winning science journalist, stated on npr.com “...it’s difficult, if not impossible, for them to fall asleep before 10:30.” If students fall asleep at 10:30 pm and get the recommended amount of rest, which is 9 ½ hours, students should not wake up until 7:00 am. Some schools have already started class at this…

Researchers have found that 59% of middle schoolers and 87% of high schoolers are getting less than the recomended 8 to 9 hours of sleep a night (National Sleep Foundation). “Conflicts between parents and school districts”(Pediatricians Say School Should Start Later for Teens Health) the conflict with starting school later has had a lot of controversy. Parents think that it is horrifically challenging to move schedules up and back with the school districts. Why? Parents have busy schedules with work and have to change their work setting or call into their job and say that they are late. It is a very confusing aspect because students want to start later for the better benefit of them. On the other hand parents have to get to work early and make sure that there kids are at school at the same time. Parents seem to struggle abundantly when it comes to school starting later. Sometimes they have to call someone to take their kids because they have a different working schedule than their kids going to school. It is a very beneficial change that people in schools need to look into because students seem to like the idea of it. It benefits them on their sleep and the way the day…

    Delayed School Start Time

One of the reasons we think the school start time should stay the same is because it will make the time commitment of participating in after school activities more difficult to manage. All of us, like many other students, participate in after school activities. A later school start time will mean that school activities will start later and run even later than they do now. The later in the day it gets, the less energy we have to give 100% effort mentally. We will also be more physically tired which means if…
