Science Olympiad Personal Statement
With a pair of binoculars, a magnifying glass, and a notepad, one of the most exhilarating parts of my childhood was rushing outside into my backyard and watching for hours on end spiders spinning delicate webs, birds feeding their young, the interactions within a decaying tree stump ecosystem, and countless of other animals going about their lives. I would often sit absolutely still, quietly sketching what I observed, and constantly wondering why things were the way they were and how. This curiosity and growing interest for how things in the world simply function and how I can use that knowledge to solve problems prevalent today to make a change eventually led to my passion for science, technology, and mathematics fields and partially my success …show more content…
The experiences I gained participating in several of my school’s academic teams such as Science Olympiad, and the VEX Robotics Team is one of the reasons why I feel so. While preparing for Science Olympiad competitions, putting great effort and hard work into learning the material for my events such as Anatomy and Physiology and Disease Detectives, an event where participants study epidemiology concepts, made me elated because I was learning about how the world functions while using math and science to find out how. I spent endless hours with my partner researching the content, …show more content…
I am aspiring to get a career in the medical or computer science field, both of which relates to the math, science, and technology field. More specifically, I am looking at being a physician or a software engineer, and MST will help me work towards that goal by providing challenging, rigorous high-level courses. The heavy work accumulated from these classes helps me be prepared for the workload to come in the future years in the process of becoming a physician or software engineer. Also, the strong academic program offered in MST will help me be prepared for postsecondary education by offering an array of Advanced Placement (AP) courses so I can earn college credit if done successfully, saving money and time in college

He offers an example of chain of events in which “[if the researcher succeeds] a flood of colleagues will pave roads over the path laid” and that they will be “taking an investigator [in minutes] to a place the pioneer spent months or years looking for.” This paved road that Barry emphasizes is showcased swiftly. All that scientific discovery happens to be is a cycle that others should be expected to follow, because if they don’t then who is to keep the wheel of new possibilities spinning? People base and build their work off of what has already been accomplished, which in turn leads to more complex thinking skills. With this never-ending cycle, it is indicated that this cycle is a faster route to reaching am educational destination because that basic paved road was already set.…

My study of Robert Gray's poetry, the 'Challenger Address' speech (1986) delivered by President Ronald Reagan and 'The Pedestrian' by Ray Bradbury have all enhanced my understanding of discovery. This is because initially my thoughts on discovery were only the physical aspect, but as I studied these texts, my understanding has grown in the societal and personal aspects. When I first started studying discovery my thoughts were about people like Captain Cook who physically discovered new lands, but after studying 'Flame & Dangling Wire' and 'The Meatworks', two didactic poems by Gray, as well as two other texts, it enhanced my understanding of discovery to have societal and personal aspects. Discoveries to me now are multifaceted and involve physical, intellectual and emotional elements.…

I had a great freshman year at IU where I could take almost any class and enjoy it, unlike high school where you had to take the exact same curriculum as your peers. After wrapping up my first year of college, one class especially stood out from many good courses that not only grabbed my attention but let my personality flourish, I101. I enrolled in this class because I’ve been interested in computers and technology from a young age. Little did I know, the course not only encompassed my fascination of computers, but dove into ethics and implications, subjects that I read about regularly and let me solve problems scientifically in a way that uniquely suited me. I enjoyed my time in the class learning topics such as python and databases. There…

I can still vividly recall the eleven-year-old me fawning over the likes of Lawrence Krauss and Neil Degrasse Tyson. I was completely immersed in everything and anything pertaining to the vast universe beyond our seemingly insignificant world. I thought I had it all figured out. I would devote my life to being an astrophysicist and eventually earn my PhD. I would relish in the pink lettering on my wall that said “Dr. Mia”, but as I approach my late teens, my mind has been bombarded with what-ifs and buts. Irrespective of my change of heart, I still have an intense passion for math and science since it is how we explain the world around us, and that is why I have settled on biomedical engineering.…

I was introduced to the field I am interested in from my 9th grade biology class. Prior to the course, I had never taken biology or any science, for that matter, that had captured my attention such as this year-long experience. I was intrigued by the subject and fascinated with all the advances in society that have been made by scientists throughout the years. The possibility of being able to do this in the future kept me engaged and I further pursued this interest by currently taking AP Biology. In addition, I was inspired by the change that scientists can make through research and…

When I was in seventh grade, my middle school participated in a very well-known science fair competition in Los Angeles County. The fair showcased projects done by students all over the county, and only a few of the best students were chosen as winners. The winners, depending on the grade level, won cash prizes, medals, and even scholarship offers. As most people would be, I was really enthusiastic that I got an opportunity to participate in such a rigorous event.…

Ever since I can remember, I loved mathematics. The exactness of it marveled me, while its complexity intrigued me. While others regarded math as straight forward, I believed that it required an ingenuity even higher than that of the arts. To me, a math problem was a chaotic sort of Lego pieces and the answer to the problem was the finished Lego set. The real fun was in devising the instructions on how to get from the original jumbled mess to the final pristine solution. However, the other kids around me scorned math and relished in what they considered to be more imaginative pursuits, such as reading a book or drawing pictures. If I could show my peers math from the way I see it, I was sure its beauty would astound them, and they would appreciate it as much as I do.…

Joining the future business leaders of America, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, becoming a youth leader at Christ Church, as well as many other volunteering activities helped me enrich my community, and make an impact in the world around me. Along with these organizations, I have played several sports in high school, in my junior and senior years I settled on my two favorite sports, track and field, and volleyball. Within these sports I have made friendships with my teammates I will never forget, and learned important lessons in humbleness when winning, and cohere with my friends when losing. By being a member of any sports teams at my high school, I regularly attended many of my school’s events, giving me the opportunity to develop relationships, and gain a tremendous sense of pride in my school. I am looking forward to bringing this same sense of pride to my college, and making many new friendships along the way. I learned over the course of my education to this point, that when I became more involved with these activities, my performance in the classroom increased alongside my…

My deep interest in math and science led me to join the Science Olympiad team. There were many events involved in the competition, and each one required different academic skills and approaches. I was selected to compete in one such competition called “Wright Stuff”. For this event, I was required to make two airplanes using only wood and a twisted rubber band for each model. The goal of this competition was to design the lightest planes with the longest flight durations. In order to be successful, competitors needed prodigious math and science skills. The participants were also required to explain, in precise detail, which factors caused the airplanes stay in the air for longer intervals. Competitors invested time and commitment, both of which were the common denominators for success in the “Wright Stuff” competition. For my part, the time and effort I devoted gave me the honor of winning both first and second places.…

Society has given fats horrible reputations, making it seem like “All Fats are Bad.” Yes, most of us have a negative reaction when hearing the word "fat" - it does not matter the context in which we hear, see or read this second "f" word. We think that all the phrases that contain this word or make reference to it must be a bad, unhealthy thing. However, biologists have proven us that things are not that black-and-white as they may seem. Try taking into account that there are friendly and unfriendly fats. This means the subject has a beneficial side and also a less beneficial side that people need to have a better understanding of.…

Ever since I was in elementary school, I have loved biological science, for it involves experiments. I was always excited for science fairs. Excited enough, I planned my science fair projects a year early every year. When I transitioned into high school, I was put in a “Regular Biology” class and immediately contacted my counselor to put me in an “Honors Biology” class. I wanted to be in a fast paced course that would teach me a lot about the subject I am in love with. I did doubt the possibility of having science fairs in high school and this upset me. As my freshman year went on, my honors biology teacher proposed a science fair to my class. This was an exciting opportunity for me as I love science fairs. I used all of my energy from excitement into my project and was winningly chosen to represent my school among my school’s township’s big science fair as my project was sublime. That was the moment I was absolutely…

Although these facts came as a shock to me, they also piqued my interest. Because much of my growth can be attributed to the extracurricular activities I have invested myself in, I cannot imagine myself without the demanding cross country practices, or the baked goods I sell to raise funds for Relay for Life, or the Gwinnett Student Leadership Team seminars that my peers and I plan for our school. Although, at times, I become more stressed with the extra demands of my club activities, the fruitful results allow me to relax as my efforts become tangible. By running, baking and socializing, I was able to briefly escape the academic pressures put on me by…
