Scoliosis Research Paper
When people hear that I have scoliosis they generally have a lot of questions, or if they know what it is they have to compare me to their aunt’s sister’s dad’s cousin who has it. Scoliosis is not the end of the world, but there should be more awareness for it. Scoliosis is defined as: an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine (Scoliosis NP). It can be different for all who have it depending on the degree of the curve or curves, and people go through it differently. For me, mine was serious enough that a simple brace would not have corrected the curve enough, and my doctor recommended surgery. I never had any idea that I had scoliosis and I did not even know what that was back when I was told that I had it. Consequently, I was pretty terrified when the doctor came back after looking at x-rays and said “Yep, you have scoliosis” all I could think was “ Dang that sounds like something you could lose a lung from”. Well, turns out you cannot directly lose a lung from it, but you can have a metal rod …show more content…
It seems to be that only people who have a friend or family member with scoliosis seem to know what it is. I was so surprised when one of the kids of the girl my uncle was dating actually knew what it was and her school had done a sort of screening type of thing for it. There are not many tests for scoliosis that I know of, and the only time I have been actually tested for it was during a physical I had at the beginning of sixth grade, which was also when they found that there was a really good chance that I had scoliosis. June is the national scoliosis awareness month, but not many people know that and I did not even know that until I specifically looked it up, so it’s purpose is kind of defeated. To be aware of it means to know what it is. Another purpose of the awareness month is to encourage people to get checked for it and to catch it early before serious complications

Getting to the point of surgery was quite a process. It took 5 years for my parents and I to find the right orthopedic surgeon for me. My condition is unusual and the doctors in Huntsville were not experienced with the surgery I needed. We travelled all over the state and even to Ohio and Michigan before finding the right surgeon. Finally in September of 2011 I got an appointment to see Dr. Tietge, a world renowned orthopedic surgeon in Detroit, to be evaluated for surgery. After he took X-rays and CT-scans he told us there was no doubt in his mind that I needed to have a femoral and tibial rotational osteotomy on both legs, which is a procedure where the surgeon breaks the patients leg in three places in order to turn the bones and straighten the leg out from its prior twisted position. Dr. Tietge said that mine was the worst case of Malignant Malaignment he had seen. He was booked solid for surgery for a year, and I couldn’t…

Life was going to dramatically change as the nurses rolled me into the operating room. Back surgery is an invasive operation as it is, but imagine it in the eyes of a thirteen-year-old girl. The surgeons explained the procedure as a spinal fusion, with titanium rods placed along both sides of my spine for stability. This procedure would correct my scoliosis. Afterward, the pain was more than anyone should endure. I was not allowed to twist or bend, and I was unable to dress myself, or leave the house alone. This was difficult to accept, as I didn’t want to become dependent upon others.…
