Brother Dear Lukas
As you read:
In the first few paragraphs I see that the story is written in 1st person narrative form as the girl. She is about 16 or 17 years old, since she attends grade 11 school. We get introduced with her father and brother Greg. Her relationship with Greg has its ups and downs, and with her father her relationship is okay. The stories conflict is based on the father wanting his children to follow his footsteps because he wished he did that with his father, and he doesn’t want his children to make the same mistake , but Greg doesn’t want that.
After Reading:
2. I believe 1 of the 2 conflicts were resolved. The conflict between Greg and Sharlene gets resolved when she runs after him to the bus stop and they have a in depth conversation and really start to understand each other. However Gregs relationship with his father didn’t get resolved, Greg stood up to his father and told him what he wants to do, he didn’t take that very well and would still want him to follow his footsteps.
3. I think the narrator isn’t very reliable because she’s a 16 year old girl, and assumes many things as if she wasn’t very sure. And she usually talks about how much she hates her town, so there could be some exaggeration. Towards the end of the story she becomes more reliable because she talks to greg and understands the situation he is in.
4. Types of characters:
Flat- one or two traits only and can be summed up in one sentence.
Round- complex with many sides, their features are fully delineated
Static- remains the same throughout the story, undergoes little or no change
Dynamic- changes over the course of the story, this could be a change in personality or attitude
Father = Static character. He doesn’t change his opinion on his kids going to college and following his footsteps.
Sharlene= Dynamic character. Her opinion and relationship with Greg changed aswell as her view on people.
Greg= Round

    A dynamic character is one who grows and changes during the course of a novel, and in Ernest Gaines’ novel A Lesson Before Dying, Jefferson is a perfect example of a dynamic character. Through the course of the novel, Jefferson grows from thinking of himself as no better than a hog, and even acting like a hog, into a man who is able to bravely walk to his own death.…

    “But the principal had ended the suspense early when she sent that letter saying Greg would probably fail Math if he didn’t spend more time studying.” “ And you want to play basketball?” His father’s brows knitted over deep-brown eyes. “ That must be some kind of joke . Now you just go into your room and hit those books.” The textual evidence is related to Greg’s conflict by showing that the letter would show that he is failing in math, and when his father saw the letter he wants Greg to study instead of thinking about basketball. The conflict is important to the events in the story because he never would have run away from his house and without meeting Lemon Brown, Greg would still value basketball over family. When Greg learns about Lemon Brown’s son, his values for basketball…

    In the short stories Araby” by James Joyce, and “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker, they both have main characters that are dynamic throughout the story. A dynamic character is an individual whose traits change towards the end of a story. Both the narrator from “Araby” and Mama from “Everyday Use” are dynamic protagonists who gain epiphanies that lead the characters into either positive or negative realizations. The narrator in “Araby” is a dynamic character who changes from being obsessive and naïve and then becomes wise at the end, and Mama is a dynamic character who changes from being intimidated and then becomes courageous.…

    This book, continues the story of Gregory, a middle schooler who started writing a diary one summer when his mother bought him one. He's continued writing his stories and complementing them with comics. The comics definitely add a lighter, fun feel to the book and kids seem to love this part. Gregory continues to get himself into embarrassing situations and learns lessons the hard way. This book starts off on New Year's Day where he tries to help other people improve and then it ends at the start of summer vacation. His father seems to be a bit disappointed in his son's and the antics they get into. He decides that they need to learn how to be "men" and threatens to send Gregory to military school. Gregory ends up doing all he can to "bond" with his father and of course, ends up in many precarious situations and not at all what he intended in the first place. The book also details ways that Greg tries to get along with his brothers, his attempts to impress a girl named Holly in his class, and how Greg attempts to get through being placed on a soccer team he doesn't like. It's obvious in the book that Greg is doing all he can as a kid to…
