Seasonal Affective Disorder Essay
My idea for feature story 3 is to discuss seasonal affective disorder and how this affects the holiday season. Seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, is a type of depression that's related to changes in seasons. Furthermore, I want to mention the possible stressors that can trigger these people to become sad or uninterested in the holiday season. Most people with SAD have symptoms beginning in the fall and continue into the winter months, sapping their energy and making them feel moody., but does this just happen out of nowhere or is it triggered by an event? I also want to address how this affects Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations. For many people, the holidays aren’t the most wonderful time of the year and I want to highlight ways to make the holiday blues better.

I will interview licensed counselor and psychologist Kim Openo about the science behind seasonal affective disorder and how people with these disorder can cope with it during the holidays. I will also talk to a close friend of mine, Marta Yelvington, about her journey with SAD.

There are countless Mayo Clinic articles and magazine features about the stress of the holidays and how depression can affect people more during the fall and winter months.

This feature story idea is timely, of great human interest and is informative information that can benefit many people. Mental health awareness is a popular trend right now and with the upcoming holidays this article is perfectly timed. Possible publications for this feature story are Women’s Health, Spirituality & Health Magazine or Psychology Today.

If my proposal is approved, I can submit a rough draft of the feature story by the due date.

Thank you in

Anne Bradstreet once wrote, – “If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant: if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome.” Have your emotions been affected by the changing seasons? Have you reacted according to the weather conditions? Sometimes, the surroundings have a stronger effect than what people may think. They affect human beings’ behaviors and actions in such a way that most of what people do and feel goes accordingly to them. This can be overwhelming, so imagine how it was like for pioneers who came to America during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Seasonal circumstances captivated Willa Cather’s imagination and motivated the creation of the master piece My…

The holiday season, a time meant for the celebration of chilly weather and cheerful greetings, is perhaps the most celebrated time in America. Each year, millions of high school students embrace the promises of the holidays as an opportunity for rest, relaxation, and freedom from the confines of scholarly pursuit. I, being one of many students weighed down by the stress of finals and academia, eagerly anticipated my holiday break that would begin the second week of December. For weeks, I planned out what I would do with my abundance of free time so that I would enjoy each day to the maximum capacity. I resolved to travel to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, where I would experience the scenic snow-capped mountains, bustling village towns, and adventurous…

Seeing smiles from ear to ear and watching people walk with an extra bounce in their step makes me excited for the holiday season. Christmas cheer is a real thing, and I see it all around. Maybe, it’s because you get off of work or school that makes people happy. Or maybe, it’s the Santa clause you see at every mall. But my reason to be cheerful at Christmas is the fact that I get to see…

Christmas is one of the most incredible times of the year; snow on the ground, a warm fire in the living room, and twinkly lights around every turn. When I was young, I loved Christmas. Toys and treats had me in a daze for almost a week straight. I was a typical kid, and my focus during any holiday was, “What do I get? Who brought me presents?”. I never realized the true meaning of why we have holidays, other than presents, until I was seventeen years old. As I’ve started to see my family less and my co-workers more, I understand that the true meaning of holidays in general, is to spend time with our loved ones. Taking my new found wisdom into account, my opinion of the “best holiday of the year” has changed from Christmas to Thanksgiving. My views, including favorite holiday, have changed because my focus on what’s important has matured.…

For many people. the months December through February create a vision of happiness and holiday cheer. The thought of all the warm Christmas cookies you and your mom would make, or the pine sweet smell of your just brought home tree, you, already prepared with your basket of ornaments, dusty from being in your basement all year long. The hope of a new year, of new beginnings, of fresh snow, and coming inside from the cold to sit by the burning fire with your favorite book. Thinking of these months can stir up a great deal of memories, and for many, these memories are wonderful. For myself, they always have been. December was a symbol of happiness for me. My family would travel to come to St. Louis, we would routinely follow Christmas traditions from years before, and love was widely spread. However, last December morphed this tremendous enjoyment I got out of these winter months.…

    4. Embrace the spirit of selflessness and give of yourself over the holidays. Rescue missions, soup kitchens, and other charitable agencies are swamped during the holidays and always welcome willing, helping hands. Food banks can always use volunteer workers, and nursing homes are often filled with older people who have no one to visit them for the holidays. Your presence could be a godsend. Any tendency to feel isolated will vanish when you give of yourself in this way.…
