Pros And Cons Of Thanksgiving
The span between Thanksgiving and New Years Day is a hard time for people who are alone. Societal expectations that everyone spend the holidays with family and friends may cause feelings of guilt or shame. It fosters the belief that anyone without a holiday connection is in some way flawed. If you allow yourself to buy into this line of thinking, it can easily pull you into the deep throes of a major holiday depression. There are many reasons you might be alone for the holidays. These could include divorce, separation, loss of a loved one, estrangement or just finding yourself alone and stuck in a new city where you haven't made any friends. You're not flawed, you're just alone.

In addition, let friends and colleagues know you will be spending the holidays alone. This will likely gain you an invitation or two. People are filled with the spirit of holiday sharing this time of the year and are happy to welcome one more guest at their table. If an invitation is forthcoming, generously express your gratitude by choosing just the right host or hostess gift. Contributing to the festivities in an unique and meaningful way. Outstanding guests often find themselves invited to future holiday gatherings as well.

3. Assume the role of holiday host or hostess yourself. Invite a friend you haven't seen for awhile or a friendly coworker. Keep it simple and don't overwhelm yourself. Small, intimate gatherings can still offer great holiday experiences.

4. Embrace the spirit of selflessness and give of yourself over the holidays. Rescue missions, soup kitchens, and other charitable agencies are swamped during the holidays and always welcome willing, helping hands. Food banks can always use volunteer workers, and nursing homes are often filled with older people who have no one to visit them for the holidays. Your presence could be a godsend. Any tendency to feel isolated will vanish when you give of yourself in this way.

5. Get the heck out of Dodge, and plan a getaway during the holidays. If you have the funds, an extended ski vacation or tropical getaway is ideal. Vacationing during the holidays just might become a great holiday tradition for

I have participated as a co-chair for this year’s Holiday office Luncheon. Just before Thanksgiving, a co-worker and I were just mentioning how we cannot believe this year is almost over. Christmas and the office holiday party came up in conversation. Candy and I said we would organize it this year (this is where became came Program Managers on the Holiday Office Party Project). At lunch that after we began brainstorming ideas to make the holiday a little more fun in the days leading up to the office party. We decided on about four activities that would be fun and most would want to participate…

A Christmas Tradition that the family has is to decorate the house all together (inside and out) and they all stay up together until the house is finished. Another tradition is that they have a big family dinner on Christmas Eve and the family stays up until midnight and each of them open one gift until the next day. A final tradition that this family has is their New Year’s tradition: on New Year’s Day, the family spends the whole day together and they play board games and watch movies as a…

Edgar Allan Poe the father of the detective genre wrote a multitude of stories with ironic twists and turns the three I have chosen to write about are The Cask of Amontilado,The Tell Tale Heart, and The Masque of The Red Death. Each of these has specific points of irony and other more subtle parts. The Cask of Amontilado is of course about a man who murders another by convincing him he has a rare wine and convincing his victim that they are good friends and he should trust him only to murder him. The Tell Tale Heart is actually a note written by a murder trying to convince the reader that he is quite sane even though he killed and dismembered a man whom he actually liked for nothing more than having a “Vultures eye.” And finally…

My family and I participate in sponsoring a family for Christmas each year. We go to the Social Apostolate or Interfaith Hospitality and buy gifts for a family in need. During this process, the family writes letters telling us about their lives, needs, and wants. Honestly, doing this is my favorite part about Christmas. Jesus wants us to help those in need and I believe by doing this we are doing what He wants.…

Thanksgiving. On Thanksgiving, many people don't even think about the Native Americans. Most people are all happy and smiley and thanking the Pilgrims for starting this glorious day. The truth is, those people should all be ashamed of themselves. Thanksgiving was started by the Native Americans, therefore, it should honor the natives. As of now, Thanksgiving has no relation to the Natives, gives no honer to the Natives, and gives them no credit for starting the holiday. Because of this problem, I have come up with a proposal… to rename Thanksgiving to Native Thanks Day.…

    Holiday Weight Analysis

Temptations are all around us during the holidays. For one, our brains will tell us that we can eat more fatty foods because we can hide out forming tummy's underneath a baggy sweater and a thick pair of tummy tucking jeans. However, if you go with that idea for too long, by the time spring comes around you would have put on so much weight that you will not want to get rid of the baggy sweaters or the warm baggy sweat pants. And believe me, it's much harder taking off that holiday weight than it was putting it on. The best trick I have learned over the years is to put on a bikini every week and see how my body looks. If I am okay with how things look, then good. If not, it's a clear harsh reminder of what I should not be doing, and that is…

This year, this Christmas, was not like any other Christmas. In one year, a wife decides to divorce, and children decide to grow up and also believe that belonging to a group of friends, beats belonging to a loving relationship with a family. So I am here alone on a Christmas day, alone, no family, lost the sense of belonging as I tried to contact the whole family to come together on a Christmas day to forgive and forget everything so that we can belong again. Even though I thought I had made peace within a once loved family with belonging. I am still outside the door.…
