What is sewage/wastewater?
Wastewater is the substance that remains after humans have used water for domestic or commercial purposes. It is consists of about 99.9% water and 0.1% suspended and dissolved solids.
primary wastewater treatment
-primary wastewater treatment occurs in sedimentation tank, also called clarifier. Here, heavier particles settle to the bottom forming sludge. Above the sludge most of the waterwaste and on to of this is a layer of oils and fats so called scum. The layers of oils and scums are removed, and the clarified wastewater enters the secondary stage of treatment.
secondary wastewater treatment
- during the second wastewater treatment aerobic bacteria are added and mixed with clarified wastewater to break down the organic waste. in the aeration tanks, oxygen is continuously added to support aerobic decomposition of organic waste into carbon dioxide, water and minerals. when this is completed, the wastewater is send to the sedimentation tank. after this, many treatment plants disinfects and discharge waterwaste to surface water bodies while others perform tertiary treatment tertiary wastewater treatment involves filtration through sand and carbon filters. during this process, many remaining dissolved pollutants are removed. the treated water is finally disinfected and discharged.
LAGOON TREATMENT
Lagoon is a treatment method that utilizes a septic tank for primary treatment with the clarified effluent from the tank being discharged into a lagoon where sunlight, temperature and wind provide the final treatment. They consist of in-ground earthen basins in which the waste is detained for a specified time (detention time) and then discharged. The size and depths can vary, as well as the degree of treatment. Although these lagoon, or ponds as sometimes called, is very simple in design, there are complex chemical, biological and physical processes taking place.
