Secular humanism possess the belief that humans have the power of being moral and ethical creatures without religion; therefore without the guidance of God. Their viewpoint is not based on the grounds of humans being inherently evil or innately good, nor does this belief sees humans as superior to nature. Secular humanism search for truth mainly based on science and philosophy while Christianity is based on miracles and the belief that humans were created in the “image” of God. The two believes are on the opposite spectrum of each other. Secular humanism would argue that we evolved through a single-celled organism into rational, emotional beings; while Christianity would argue we are guided by God to become rational emotional beings. …show more content…
“If mankind is a product of evolutionary forces and not a special creation of God, then man's real purpose is ambiguous at best” (Weider & Gutierrez, 2014, p68). Humanist believes that mankind has no real purpose or significance; however there is the happiness principle. Humanist believes that their purpose of life is the pursuit of happiness; one would say they survived their purpose if they lived an exciting and happy life. Christianity believes mankind’s’ sole purpose for existence is to serve, love, and to devote one’s life to God. Christians lives through the teaching of God, the Bible. It is believed the expression of love and devotion can be shown through the sharing of gospel with everyone (Matthew 29:19).
The Question of Morality Humanist value system, ethics and morals are built to enhance human happiness. Mankind is entitled to make his/her own decisions on what is right or wrong based and should be constructed to maximize happiness. This ties back into the humanist purpose of existence. The greatest gifts to Christians are within the comfort of knowing God expects their imperfections. The Bible teaches right and wrong but also states that there will be guidance for how they should carry themselves (Proverbs 4:10-13). On the other hand, humanists gage morality based on standards set forth to maximize their happiness.
