Semiotic Analysis
This semiotic analysis discusses the advertising of the women's perfume, Pleasures. The essay will analyze the advertisements in terms of its status as signs, whose meanings not only give a favorable impression of the product, but also are compatible with, and complementary to the feminine context in which they are intended. Although the advertisement does not physically represent the product, they all provide an important symbol of the product.
The ads use a variety of signifiers which publicize both the identity of the brand and the image. It is important to consider the thought of the text in which it appears as elegant, soft and romantic. The ads predominately feature a female model in her early to mid-twenties. In one ad, she is sitting on what appears to be a porch rail holding a puppy, surrounded by pink flowers with a joyful expression on her face. Adjacent to her is the product itself. The center of the product has the name ‘Pleasures’ written in beautiful text. The word ‘Pleasures’ appears large in consideration of the rest of the text. Underneath the image is the brand name of the product, ‘Estee Lauder.’ Directly below the brand name are the words: ‘Defining Beauty.’ Together these separate components form an effective and cohesive message.
The scene depicts that the model is definitely in a pleasurable place because of the perfume. The writer of the ad tries to convey the feeling of pleasure by capturing a moment when the model’s facial expression and body posture appear to merge with the aroma of perfume. The denotation of this ad illustrates a model with her hair flowing around her dress, which is almost the same color as the flowers. Similar colors seem to be the trend in the ad and the writer tries to capture the viewer by using one color, so that the viewer's eyes are not distracted by too much color.
Furthermore, the usage of floral as the background image of the advertisement is to express the feeling that life is sweet and wonderful. The

    The advertisement uses many different sizes and colors within the whole image. The top Cover Girl is in the light green color reflecting back to the idea of softness and it is the vantage point for a person’s eyes. It is very bold and automatically draws attention to the top half of the advertisement. Also, the different very black and dark bold text at the bottom of the page seems intriguing for a few reasons. First, the different font types and sizes attempt to make you really see the first three lines very clearly and get an understanding of what the product is. However, the work “new” happens to be in green followed by “natureluxe silk foundation” with “luxe” being bolded, suggesting that this product is truly “luxury touched by nature;” which is in very small print right below that as well.     The scene of the ad takes place at night in a sky-rise apartment in some thriving metropolis. In the apartment, the drapes are for now pushed aside while a woman, perhaps in her 20s, stands straddling a man, with an indefinable age, sitting in a 60s-style chair with only his legs and forearm visible. The man holds a martini and the woman holds a drink mixer while seductively looking into the hidden face of the mystery man. The man is wearing a business suit and the woman wears the clichéd “little black dress” paired with studded black heels. Both the male and female are Caucasian.     The billboard has a serious tone. The woman is not smiling; she is just looking from the corner of her eye with seriousness in her face. By using this tone, Kimball’s Jewelers reflects as more elegant and classy. People relate high-class and elegance to be more serious. The brown and neutral colors add to the tone.     My other intention is paid to the shape of the woman’s face, a triangle, which is depicted as slim and pale. Viewers are then able to feel more delicacy and vulnerability, protected in the man’s embrace. The beauty of dress outlined by colorful circles is also dominated.
