semiotic analysis of silent movies
This is my semiotics project. The character I used for this project was Charlie Chaplin I made two photoshopped images and one PAPERmache image. I made the paper mache image out of a balloon and newspaper and a few photoshopped pieces of paper that look like a dollar, this was the wealthy part of the project. My reason for this was so that my character was literally made of money, I even used the part of the dollar with his face on it for his eyes so it gave off the impression that he saw him self. It took me over a week to make his head because of the time i had to spend waiting for it to try and paint parts.
My second choice was the evil/badass option, i shopped Charlie into a fire background and swapped his cane for a pitchfork, i also added some images into the background, i believe these images to give off the evil representation. I also put a red hue around the character to make him stand out.
My last choice was the feminine option, I put Charlies face into a sun flower and added some red hearts around him as well as a bottle of perfume. There were already butterflies in the image but i changed them to a pink colour instead of a yellow one.

The subject matter on which I am doing this assignment on is a piece of photography. This piece was done by a local photographer Greg Hill. He accordingly named his work “Pierre Pressure”. This piece of photography captures a pierre and its surroundings in Sebastian, Florida. Above the pierre is the focal point of the artwork, a breath-taking Florida sunset. The sunset is constructed of various hues of pink, orange, and yellow. The alluring sunset is ever so slightly hidden by a veil of oddly formed clouds. The water at the bottom of the photograph reflects the beguiling beauty of the sky. To the left side of the print stands the pierre. The pierre itself is in much darker lighting than the rest of the subject matter. The subject matter in…

In my drawing you first see the silhouette like figure that is Mildred. I decided to use a mannequin like shape because mannequins are usually without expressed feelings, like Mildred. er skin she is covered with the iconic black and green look of a motherboard. This represents how Mildred was so connected to her technology that it consumed her. You will also notice she is shackled to a box that represents her parlor and her screens. I decided to do this because she spent so much time with her “Family” she became a slave…

My collage represents the theme of freedom and confinement from the novel “Of Mice and Men”. The novel is set in America during the Depression and this context is shown in the way I’ve used the front page of the New York newspaper from the day of the Wall Street crash as the A3 page for my collage. I’ve deliberately washed out the newspaper to symbolize that the Depression was important in the novel but didn’t take over the story. As a female, I was annoyed the way the novel made women out negatively by using words like ‘tramp’, ‘bitch’ and ‘tart’ and the way men in the novel used them as prostitutes, so my representation shows the freedom and confinement of Curly’s wife – I’ve given her power in my representation because her and the other women had none in the novel and I’ve made the men all fairly insignificant in my representation because it wasn’t fair that they had all the power in the book.…

I gain clarity in my works by visualizing the problems and objectives through a series of moving images or short films as a result of my imagination. Visualizing my objectives allows me to take a consumer's perspective and gain insight on how my work may be interpreted. The solutions I gain from my imagination will determine what medium I use to create the final product. Whether the medium used is a short motion graphic, photography, hand-drawn illustration, or the physical product itself, every aspect of a project is critically examined to enhance the experience. Thorough research is also reflected in how the graphic design such as colour, typography, and composition weave back to support the story being…

The character I chose to render a costume design for is Troy Maxson from the play Fences by August Wilson. Troy is the family’s main source of income and his character is a very strong willed and stubborn 53-year-old man. Troy relentlessly told his son, Cory, multiple times that his football recruitment was a waste of time and that he should get “…recruited in how to fix cars or something where he can make a living” (8; ch.1, sec.1). Therefore, from Troy’s actions, I knew that his costume should entail a sense of seriousness such as nothing brightly colored or crazy patterned clothing. Another area in the script that influences my costume choices was the setting of the play. The play was set on a dirty entrance of an old brick building house…

The world of comics is filled with icons that are portrayed as the “vocabulary of comics”. Images in comics are no more than a visual representation of a person, place or idea. An iconic image is used in comics as the subjective to represent the reader. The cartoon McCloud is a visual representation of himself but in time, the reader will feel subjective to the cartoon and it will become a…

I am proud of the artifact that I had created because I had used my creativity to create my a. I chose not to trace an image, but to instead draw it with my own hands. I had also had put my full effort into this articulate. That is why I am proud of this piece I made. This piece was a challenge for me because I am horrible at drawing. I had to take my time dawning over and over again to get the right picture drawn properly. That was a challenge for me, but in the end the artwork look came out . This piece shows that I understand how propaganda was used during world war 1 and world war 2. My artifact shows this when I state quotes that are just as catchy ad the propaganda used in WW1 and WW2. The artwork in my artifact represents a theme that takes place during WW1 and WW2.…

Impressionism was developed in Paris during the 1860s by artists who rejected the official salons and were consequently shunned by the most powerful art institutions. By turning away from dated ideals, the Impressionists aimed to capture the sensory effects of the scene – the impression objects made in an instant. In the similar way the Impressionists did, my self-portrait demonstrates short, broken strokes that convey forms. In addition, there are few, pure colors used while emphasizing the effects of light. The loose pencil strokes give an effect of spontaneity that contradicts any carefully constructed composition, much like the Impressionists. Furthermore, the two-dimensionality of my form is reminiscent of the flat figures in Impressionist…

This is my project on Austin Carlile. It was to show how he inspires me, etc and this is my visual part of it.This is the speech i had to present to the class:“You have many options in life, Never make giving up one of them.” – Austin Robert Carlile. This man is an inspiration to millions. He has saved and changed thousands of lives, And I am among them. To any of mice and men fan, the ampersand is more than just a symbol.“The same kid, the first day of 10th grade, who stole my backpack, unzipped it, threw all my books in the snow, trashed them all. Then later met me in the P.E Locker room during 4th period, literally beat me up. Smashed my head on the toilet, Broke 2 ribs - Came to Vans Warped Tour in Denver, 2012, And I saw him in the crowd, Looking up at me on stage. And I later found out through family members that he has 2 kids, And didn’t go to college, Lives in the same town, And didn’t really do anything with his life.”The fact that Austin has been through many of the same things that some kids go through everyday, and has over come them, is one of the many reasons tons of people look up to him. When he was 17 his mother died on the corner of 2nd Street & Sebring Court, In LeHigh Acres, FL. His mother was his hero, and it caused him so much pain, but did that stop him? No. He wrote a song “Second & Sebring” Which he made in honor of his mom.”I got a call from my mom and I couldn’t take the call because I was working, She left me a voicemail, then two hours later my grandma called me crying, saying, ’ something happened to your mum.. go to the hospital.’ “I was freaking out. One of the ladies drove me because they didn’t want me driving because I was so scared, and as soon as I got to the hospital there was an ambulance pulling in and they pulled my mom off and that was the last time I saw her.”Some get the lyrics to this song tattooed on them in an ampersand form.As he was 20 he created a band called “Attack Attack” & made an album with them, Then later…

Two artists who were instrumental in my growth were William Kentridge and Diane Victor. I took from each of these artists only an aspect of their dexterity. Kentridge’s animated film “Pain and Sympathy” particularly interested me. The use of monochrome line was essential to the success of this piece, generating the the visual impact I yearned to create. Whilst visually, Diane Victors work, (Smoke Portraits) besides being facial portraits, differs from my own. Although the level of emotion behind her work correlates with my work.…
