Senior apartments alleviate the individual from home maintenance responsibilities and provide a sense of security other than living alone in a private dwelling. Cohousing is a modified version of a senior apartment, in that residents have private homes with all the traditional features. However, there is a significant amount of opportunity and locations for social interactions. This particular housing differs from the others in that usually a long-term contract between the resident and community is termed for the remainder of their lifetime. This aging in place concept provides a flexible relocation process that is significantly easier because the resident can move from a lower level of assistance, such as independent living, then to a higher standard of care, such as a nursing home. Moreover, when a high degree of care is no longer required, the resident can potentially move back to a lower standard of care, such as assisted living depending on the individual's needs without leaving the healthcare campus, friends or family. There are several for-profit CCRCs; there are also non-profit organizations such as religious, fraternal, and community organizations, universities, and hospitals that provide sponsorship to these senior communities.
A format of the CCRC is the life care community as they offer residents an insurance style of the contract to provide various levels of care for a monthly fee, which can even include acute care and physician’s visits. Residents still have the availability and flexibility to move from different levels of care on one site as their needs
