Patient Care 2403 Sensitivity! What is sensitivity? Sensitivity is the quality or condition of being sensitive. In patient care to what degree is our sensitivity. This week at clinical I got to experience my first Trauma One. I live in Evanston, Wyoming so being involved in a Trauma case is very rare but not unusual. The ER called over to inform us of a trauma and that we needed to be over right away. Once we got there with the portable, RN’s and doctors were all over the place. The trauma came in and it was a gunshot to the upper left quadrant. They continued CPR and the doctor said “that’s it we are headed to the OR.” Not before all this was he screaming cause one there was not enough gowns, two the RN’s are not prepared and ready and three why isn’t radiology here, even though we were but just behind the corner to make room. The ER nurses had a student nurse with them that night. She and I stood next to each other. They had yelled several times at her and she asked “how do you do this?” Before I could answer we all had to run to the OR. Once there the doctors tried to save the patient but it was too late, making this my first fatal trauma. Not only was this a patient but this patient’s mother was an employee of the hospital. After they called it everyone was hysterical. The student nurse asked me why is everyone so overly sensitive right now. I pulled her aside and let her know the situation. She still stated there being too sensitive. I then had to reevaluate my own feelings. I did not know this patient or his mother very well. Although I couldn’t help but be sad by the incident how could this student nurse not be? We all work together as a team and if you member is down it affects us all. In high school I was not a sensitive gal, to be honest I was the bully, something I don’t like to admit to but need to in order to understand where I am know. I’ve been working in the medical field since I was 16
