In 1954, the United States Supreme Court ruled that public schools operating under the legal concept of “Separate but Equal” were operating unconstitutionally. In the fifty years since that ruling special population groups that should have benefited from that ruling still experience pubic schools that are widely inefficient and ineffective. The school organizations who typically experience the problems associated with the poor implementation of the Brown Decision are urban public schools. Often when schools districts initiate reform, this systematic change takes the form of funding and program sponsorship to elementary level learners, however when students reach secondary they still face challenges associated with poor funding and program sponsorship. Civil Rights heroes such as Ruby Bridges and Linda Brown should not be just admired from afar, but serve as an example to emulate (610). Students should be able to see and speak about their present-day situation where only “1 or 2 percent of the enrollment” (611) is white and the rest of the students are black. I am reviewing Jonathan Kozol’s auto-biography, Death at an Early Age. This piece of literature provides the reader with an in-depth, personable account of schools of the 1960’s and the corruption that had flourished. Throughout this piece Kozol told of grim stories about public schools throughout Boston, Massachusetts; many of which would be incredibly disturbing. I believe Kozol’s thesis was the following: although legal segregation had been abolished in 1954, (Brown v Board) socio-economic segregation was still in full effect over ten years later. In his book, “The Shame of the Nation”, Jonathan Kozol outlines core inequalities in the American educational system. According to Kozol although great steps were made in the 1960s and 1970s to integrate schools, by the end of the 1980s schools had begun to re-segregate. I agree with both of the authors that there is a problem in the United Sates education system when it comes to race and segregation but I do not think that the issue is as wide spread as the authors make it out to be but in other areas the situation is only getting worse and this lack of diversity in schools can only lead to further problems with race relations. In comparing the essay Still Separate, still unequal: American’s Educational Apartheid by Johnathan Kozol and the essay Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria by Beverly Tatum you see that both essays have many similarities and differences in the points that they are trying to convey as well as the conclusions that each of the essays come to. Each essay presents different problems in the education system in the United States with racial equity, such as the point being raised by Kozol that many schools in major cities across the country are all but segregated; but they also show that there is some potential in fixing the education system.…
Board of Education case was brought about the Supreme Court, they were presented the question “Does segregation of children in public schools solely on the basis of race, even though the physical facilities and other ‘tangible’ factors may be equal, deprive the children of the minority of equal educational opportunities?” During the case, Thurgood Marshall attacked segregation by noting that minority students are made to feel inferior and feelings of inferiority damage self-esteem. With racial integration, the students would have an opportunity to interact with people who are “different” from them and the feeling of inferiority would lessen (Greene). Another belief was that racial integration would help the students become more tolerant of racial differences. The whites disagreed with this, though. They were more resistant to school desegregation than anything else. They absolutely did not want their children going to school with black children (Klarman 23). The case of Brown v. Board of Education, gave a glimmer of hope to African Americans for a new reform of civil rights. Oliver Brown, from Brown v. Board of Education, had his daughter face segregation from their local school. One father had a great shock when, “In 1950, Oliver Brown was told that his eight-year-old daughter could not attend the Topeka, Kansas, neighborhood elementary school four blocks from their home because Kansas law required African Americans to attend separate schools” (Brown v.
