Septimus Compare And Contrast
Septimus and Clarissa may be two very different characters, one being a soldier from WWI who suffers from PTSD and the other is a 50 year old lady who is planning a party. Holmes is a figure that represents the darkness whereas Septimus was thinking of the sun and represents the light and innocence. In addition, Septimus’s death was his expression of defiance against the society that Dr. Holmes represented. Septimus’s suicide was a stance to hold what was still dear to him and to not lose what was important to him and he dies and “plunges holding his treasure” (184). Septimus was able to keep his dignity and going to a mental institution would have taken that away from him. Furthermore, Septimus already feels like the world is out to get him, “The world has raised its whip; where will it descend?” (14) and ever since the war Septimus distrusts people and he regards humans as evil and capable of killing men like Evans. Rather than having to become a part of the society that he detests and becoming a part of Dr. Holmes game, Septimus kills himself. He feels trapped and oppressed especially by men like Dr. Holmes who will take him away from Lucrezia and put him into a mental hospital. Yet, the only way for Septimus to escape this captivity and to escape his past he commits suicide. However, Septimus’s death may have ended one timeline, but it did not end the circular cycle of time which will continue to go on even when you are gone. Time will continue to exist and continue to tick on even if you kill yourself, and ends and beginnings will continue to

In the book Devil in the White City, Erik Larson introduces us to Dr. Henry Howard Holmes, who was born named Herman Webster Mudgett. At first glance, Holmes appears to be a typical fresh, crisp, well-dressed, blue eyed and dark haired young man. Holmes first appears on the morning of August 1886 in Chicago’s train station with a ticket to Englewood, a village located in the town of Lake. Because he presents himself as a wealthy, charming man, he does not fit the typical description of a serial killer, and we do not suspect what really goes on behind closed doors. By using his charming personality along with his manipulative and witty characteristic, Holmes is able to target weak people and exert his power over them to avoid detection of his successful killings, piled debt and fraudulent behavior.…
