Service Learning Project Observation Report
My service learning project was Carestream Charity, this non profit organization group brings together hairstylist and volunteers throughout the Vegas Valley and provides many different services to the less fortunate. (February 21 2017 total of 8 hours) One of the events I was able to attend was haircuts for K-12 age students that are either homeless or are living in a shelter. This event provided haircut for over 500 students in the Valley that is a massive amount of children that are either living on the streets or in a facility for homeless families.
I am a licensed hairstylist but I did not cut hair at this event rather helped prepare necessary stylists with needed supplies, gathered donated hygiene products, put together bags and handed out supplies to children. I also was able to attend a silent auction at The Space, February 23 2017 total of 5 hours) This event was benefitting Carestream’s own airstream trailer that is in the processes of being completed and will soon serve the homeless adults, veterans and children in the valley with haircuts, shaves and other supplies. Along with the event I was able to write personal thank you letters to each recipient for their donations for this great cause. This event alone was able to raise over $10,000 for repairs

One of the biggest events is during prom. Dresses, shoes, haircuts, and styles are provided free of charge for students who can not afford these things to attend prom. I have no suggestions for this non-profit, I believe that Julie is providing a service for that many people take for ranted and she has put smiles on many men. Women and children's faces that would rather not be smiling. I learned that there are far more children of all ages that are homeless then I had ever imagined and how grateful these children are to receive simple hygiene products and haircuts. I will continue to help in anyway I am able and encourage others as

People from the community and surrounding areas could welcome the chance to pull together and host a Christmas feast and auction. Dinners could be purchased at a nominal fee for individuals and families. Businesses from the area could be encouraged to join in and support the cause by donating items to auction after dinner and then we could hold a Christmas dance. Getting a local news personality to come in as auctioneer would definitely buy the event some mention on our local stations resulting in advertising the event. Because the XYZ Corporation has been meeting the needs of the medically indigent for three years now are we are recognized as a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization we could hold a joint fund raising activity with one of our affiliates such as United Way of America (Martin, 2001). By conducting our annual donor renewal campaign through our volunteers efforts our attempt would be to reach as many of our existing donors either through our mailing list, friends, program members, local business, or by telephone solicitations who may which to make contributions and are in need of reducing their taxable income (Martin, 2001) .…

Being active in National Charity League for six years, I have had the pleasure of working with many different philanthropies, my favorite being The Tualatin School House Pantry. Operating out of the basement of a church, the food bank helps to feed families in the community who are struggling financially. While my first few experiences at the food pantry were emotionally challenging, I found them to be very eye opening. I met many people from different backgrounds, yet they all shared the same hardship, the inability to afford food for themselves and their families. Wanting to do more for the recipients, I received training to be one of the personal shoppers.…

My children and I volunteered to help set up the facility for this year’s Thanksgiving dinner. The day before Thanksgiving we drove to downtown Atlanta to the Georgia World Congress and Convention Center. We were amazed by the number of volunteers already there. There were people from all walks of life, executives, athletes, clergy, housewives and fathers, and even some people who were clearly in need themselves.…

As apart of my service, I assisted in helping the community as well as others through the Notre Dame Annual Pilgrimage, Harvest Kitchen at St. Kevin’s Roman Catholic Church and participating in the Notre Dame Walk Against Male Violence. In October of 2010, I walked and raised money for the annual Pilgrimage at our school which involved trudging the distance from our school to the Allenburg Bridge. The money raised assisted those in third world countries mainly going to a facility called Yancana Huasy intended for the use by mentally and physically challenge young adults. The money is also sent to Haiti, Peru and the Dominican. As a volunteer for Harvest Kitchen my responsibility was to help deliver the meals to the people as well as work the handicap elevator in order to assist immobile people. Other duties included clearing dishes, socializing with others, setting up and serving food and drinks. Lastly, I also participated in the Walk Against Male Violence in which I was required to raise money and walk the 5 Kilometers as a method of raising awareness and money for abused women.…

With this group, I had the opportunity to go to the local Willa Gill Center and package CARE packages for the community. The CARE packages contained basic needs such as toothpaste and shampoo, and special items like nail polish and makeup. After we packaged everything, we were able to sort out clothing and cans that were going to be distributed the next day. Working behind the scenes and helping the workers prepare was very rewarding.…

I fulfilled my volunteer hours by packaging red hats for babies and making hats for the NIQU babies at Methodist hospital. I fulfilled these hours at La Bien. During both experiences, making and packaging the hats was quit relaxing because I was able to get away from studying and homework for a little while. I packed about 50 red hats and I made five hats that included a ninja turtle, a crown, and a butterfly. The hats will help keep the baby warm, and the hats provide the babies with an article of clothing. The American red heart society donates the red hats to make awareness of heart disease, the most common birth defect in the country.…
