Service Learning Project Reflection
For my service-learning project, I worked in a third grade classroom in Braden River Elementary located in Sarasota County. I preformed various activities as an assistant to my instructor, and had to remain adaptable in an ever-changing environment. Such tasks include; tutoring, grading, crafting, teaching, reading to students, teaching lessons, accompanying students when traveling around campus creating lesson plans and acting as a friend/role model to the students. My project has extended vastly beyond the five hours required. I have remained in contact with a few students via email whom I truly bonded with. Many of the students come from low-income families, and some are currently in the foster care system. Due to personal experience with my adopted brother, I know that sometimes, all a child needs is consistency – something or someone to hold onto when their life is constantly subject to change. I was proud to act as that consistent person in their life, and will continue to do so. …show more content…
However, due to many personal reasons, I have decided to change majors. I entered college with the mindset that I was made to change the world and I thought I knew that I wanted to help children specifically. Although my future career will no longer fill that mindset, through this service-learning project, I have come to the realization that I can help children in a major way – even if it is not through the avenue of a career. I have been taught through Jewish heritage that it is everyone’s responsibility to leave the world better than when you entered it. A core belief of mine is that everyone has the civic (and human) duty to help others. This may be through a political path, personal or career wise. Thus, this particular service opportunity hasn’t particularly changed my spiritual, civic or political values – but rather, simply strengthened my

After speaking with these individuals, it was decided the focus of this project should be to make foster parents aware of the influence they can have in making the foster youth’s transition smoother. Thirty of those fifty service hours are a mandatory aspect of the junior year curriculum and must involve work with either the poor or marginalized. Personally, I chose to complete my necessary hours with the organization Outdoors for All, specifically working with the marginalized. Outdoors for All (OFA) strives to enrich the quality of life for children and adults with disabilities through outdoor recreation by offering programs just as skiing, kayaking, and biking. I participated in their downhill ski program, teaching lessons to people ranging from four to thirty-five years old with a vast array of both mental and physical disabilities. Volunteering with OFA improved not only my teaching skills but my ability to work with all people regardless of their…

I am so honored and humbled to have been an influence for the youth in my community, showing them that education, opportunities, and justice are for everyone regardless of life’s circumstances and arrogant opinions. I have enjoyed every moment of working with children, but I want to fight for them and their families in in ways I can only do with a career in law. Law, at its heart, creates order, and ensures vulnerable people are protected. A life of service is a noble one that I hope to achieve. A life where I can offer hope when hope seems…

Furthermore, I hope to accomplish from my senior project of donating to the Child Advocacy center for their hard work and involvement of “ChildHood abuse’’ and cutting down on neglect and uncaring parents in Bastrop, Tx. For my main goal is to locate my real parents and ask them the question I’ve waited for years to ask them. Why? I expected to be able to touch others and spread out the word, that “ we all have feelings”. Assessing my project, I’ve accomplished a lot in just a short time period span. I know see what I’m capable of achieving. As long as I keep faith and keep moving straight. Final thoughts about my senior project is I would like to thank all that has helped me and listened to my thoughts and concerns pertaining to ChildHood Abuse. It’s been a great blessing having all you by my side and thank you all to friends and family helping me accomplish my goal. I’ve taken multiple turns in this project, along with many emotional obstacles. It wasn’t an easy project but I would like to say, I did it! In conclusion, “Together we are strong, alone we are…

Many foster youth do not graduate from high school, but with the bonds between foster families and the foster children, there will be a long success in their future. Some of them have their own stories that they would love to share with the world. “A young boy suffered from abuse and neglect and responded with outbursts, bad behavior and anxiety. His foster father gave him unconditional love and helped him through disruptive visits with his birth mother that would frequently set him back. The boy healed and improved greatly and yearned for a permanent home. For Christmas this year, his foster father gave him the greatest gift of love the boy could imagine.” “Five siblings were in need of adoptive homes. One of our foster parents recruited three other families to KidsPeace Foster Care, and together, the families adopted all five children through KidsPeace. They all live in the same town and most attend the same church, so the siblings get to see each other often and celebrate birthdays and holidays in a big happy group. One of the mothers candidly tells her unique story and discusses her motivation.” “Teenage mothers to be are often placed in foster care to ensure they learn how to care for themselves and their babies. In this case, the baby was born…

The first service learning project I completed was in 2006 which was a participation in tutoring a year six student in the Aquinas College junior school. This tutoring was during winter. After the first week I found it difficult to complete three sport trainings a week (1 in Melville), an after school guitar lesson, a hockey game on Friday nights plus the tutoring program, I thought I was going to have to stop the tutoring and complete service learning in a different area. But after the first week of tutoring I found that tutoring became a priority, I felt that Ricardo found the tutoring much help and seemed to benefit from it. I finished the tutoring program without missing one session.…

I am currently completing my service learning at Martin Luther King Elementary School working with children ranging from Kindergarten to 5th grade in an after school program. This program provides the children with a safe and comforting place to do their homework, hangout with their friends, and get a snack. Since I am just getting to know these children I do not know everything about them and their background, so I do not have a lot of examples that relate back to the class work we do. In class I feel as if a lot of the material we focus on relates back to the parents, home life, and how they have been raised thus far. I only see them once a week, so I cannot make judgments regarding their course of development and influences that have left impacts on their life. The two examples that I have noticed that we have covered in class include Vygotsky's Sociocultural Theory and The Ecological Systems Theory. I have noticed elements of the Sociocultural Theory in the children’s dialogue. Considering their age the children have a very advanced dialogue with rather colorful language. Personally, I was not even familiar with some of these words that Kindergarteners and 1st graders are expressing. I think this has to do with the culture they were raised and possibly the community. I think that the Kindergarteners at the school pick up on language that is used by the older kids and then they start to say it. Although teachers and administrators try their best to stop the kids from using bad language and reprimanding them when they do I feel as if the colorful language they have come to know is forever imbedded in their brain. I think the Ecological Systems Theory plays a big role in understanding these children and the school I am working at. For me it was rather different to go into a school like this in a bad neighborhood and see children behaving in ways that I had never seen before. However, for the teachers that work there are so used to it they don’t even…
