Sesshu's Painting: Winter Landscape

Sesshu’s painting known as “Winter Landscape” depicts the mountainous terrain of China with people settled across it. At first glance, without being technical, Sesshu uses only ink and paper to paint the mountain range, slowly adding less distinct mountains as it moves further away, and then vegetation in the form of trees is scattered about the mountain. There is a human presence mixed in with the nature in the form of a man walking up the mountain and a large temple or palace like structure in the background surrounded by smaller buildings. If I knew nothing about the formal knowledge or prior information I would probably only notice the landscape and the visual details. However, since I have some level of formal knowledge I notice a lot more in this work of art. There are elements and features like perspective and media that ultimately has an effect on the viewers. The mountain also acts as a base for the objects in the foreground with the rocks and trees all being set up on it. The second triangle on the right side stretches the image as it makes the image an open composition by making the mousing range split off further into the painting. These two triangle also split this image into two distinct parts a foreground and background. The image is also split into three parts sut horizontally one line following the black line down the middle and the second one following the tree branches in the foreground This part of the naturally occurring threes in nature and helps add to the nature in the image. There is balance and perspective put into the picture. the balance in the image is asymmetric with the use of the atmosphere slowly graying out the mountains in the far back to create perspective behind the temple like
