Sethe Vs. Beloved
Sethe is the best thing in comparison to Beloved being the best thing because Sethe is a very resilient person. Sethe is a very caring person while Beloved does not care about anyone else except herself and Sethe. Sethe’s history is so harsh, so many things had happened to her and does not say anything about it while Beloved still cries really easily. Sethe is a really tough person. She does not get hurt easily because of what has happened to her. She does not care for a lot of people but she cares for the people she loves. In the story it said how she got beat so badly that her back looks like a type of tree that has many branches. She did not care about that anymore. She thought of it as a bad thing that happened but even then she does not shed any more tears. Sethe cares for only some people. These people are the people she loves the most. Beloved on the other hand, is very selfish. She only cares about herself and Sethe. In the story it says that Beloved kept saying “Mine. Mine. Sethe is mine”. This is another example on how Sethe is her own better self. Meanwhile Sethe had a relationship with Paul D so she loved him. She also loved her kids very much. Beloved …show more content…
Some examples are when her mom told her that they are going to kill her and that Sethe should be able to find her by the mark she had on her stomach. Her mom did die but Sethe was not sure wether that was her mom’s dead body or someone else’s body. Another example is that she killed her daughter because she did not want her kids to suffer like how she suffered. She only managed to kill one but that was heartbreaking. Sethe has not had someone over in a really long time. Her two boys left her when they were really young. Sethe did get to chose who could marry her but she was only 14 when she had to chose. She ran away from slavery while pregnant on really harsh conditions. She went through so much while Beloved didn’t and she is being treated like a

So was Sethe justified in trying to kill her children? Life was terrible for women, and her slavemaster clearly would not make life easy for her. Though the reader is taken back to the early 1850s to a time in which Sethe was in her teen years still under a master in a Sweet Home plantation in Kentucky and in a prison in Alfred, Georgia. Beloved travels through both the immediate and distant past memories while occasionally including transitions to the present tense. In fact the novel is told from third person by the anonymous narrator. In contrast when the characters become the narrators the novel generally changes to first person in order to further express their personal opinions and memories. Throughout the changing of the point of view in the novel the tone changes as well from character to character usually to greater describe their attitudes toward personal…

The attempt at recapturing the past is important in plays, poems, and especially novels. In Toni Morrison’s Beloved, the character Sethe views the past with feelings of longing because she was a former slave who endured a tough life. Due to Sethe’s longing feelings, the theme of slavery as a destruction of one’s identity is developed in the work. Sethe is an enslaved woman in Cincinnati, Ohio who is determined to escape to freedom in the 1850’s. In order to keep her children from any trauma from Sweet Home, she attempts to murder them. She manages to kill Beloved and her two older boys run away, so she is left with Denver. Her feelings of longing come into play when Beloved shows up out of the water. She is a naïve virgin who excitedly marries a shallow rich and emotionless Marquis. She comes from a family who is not quite poor but with limited financial resources you need to get married to survive; she is aware that marquis is well endowed and insists that although she cannot resist him but does not love him; the marriage is simply how it ought to be. But, choosing to be swept away by glamour and wealth she continues to ignore the dangers. She always mentions how every time she looks at him he looks as though he is hiding behind a mask and it isn’t until the opera where she realizes one expression, lust; he sees her only as a sexual object. At the time this makes her excited due to her naivety, this is made clear when she says she recalls, "for the first time in my innocent and confined life, I sensed in myself a potentiality for corruption that took my breath away." (11 Carter) Not aware that targeted her for her innocence and how easy it would be to corrupt her young mind. It is not quickly apparent to Sethe that this woman somehow has a connection to her dead daughter, despite the fact that Sethe herself believed her daughter’s sad ghost haunted 124. Despite Sethe not realizing the connection, there were a plethora of clues towards this interpretation of who the woman was. There was a biological connection between both Sethe and the new Beloved, from their very first meeting all the way to the end of the book. When Beloved first arrives, Sethe finds herself with an unending bout of incontinence, which was coupled with the fact that Beloved was drinking water like she had never had a drop of it pass her lips before. Sethe, when she utters “Nobody was going to nurse her like me…nobody knew that but me and nobody had her milk but me.” (19) This explains us how she never had a chance to be with her mother, to have a real mother-daughter quality time. Being an over obsessive mother to her sons and daughters is because she didn’t want them to go through the things that she went through. And this elucidates that Sethe thought process of killing her baby girl is the only way of protecting her baby girl from being raped in future just like her. A mother’s instinct is a dangerous thing because a mother cannot be wrong about her gut feeling. Just as Sethe predicted, Beloved after eighteen years when returned, she was beautiful, shining and glowing with soft hands and slippery feet with no cracks on her heels. If Beloved was given a chance to live her life by Sethe, she would have probably gone through the same thing as her ma’am or even worse. Now, how this tells us anything about Sethe psychologically affected? Her body is healed, her scars are closed; it is bygone, it happened eighteen years before. Does that mean she got over the incident that changed all those lives that surrounded her? Sethe recalls the day she got raped by the two boys and how they stole her milk. For eighteen long years she pretends to have forgotten her slave life, her abuse, and her wounds. But in reality, every day she relives it and it is not easy to set…

Without the anger and hatred both characters feel for each other, the story would be obsolete and highly ineffective. The connection to her life is the same as the Creature’s: society and the people closest to her are cruel and shun her due to her decision and expectations of society. As a result of the cruelty, instead of lashing out like her characters chose to, she explains her sadness and loneliness through her work. No one is immune to cruelty but the way a person handles the pain highly influences their character and…

She did not look at them; she simply swung the baby toward the wall planks, missed and tried to connect a second time, when out of nowhere the ticking time the men spent staring at what there was to stare at–the old nigger boy, still mewing, ran through the door behind them and snatched the baby from the arch of its mother's swing.”]. This is not a personal essay of what I believe, but I will speak my mind. This quote made me cry. I do not know whether I should hate Sethe or sympathize with her. In a weird way all humans want to sympathize even with the wrong doers. We want to believe that all propel have a heart and have reasons to doing the wrong things they do which is what happens in this case. But now we have to think did she not just sacrifice her child to get her family out of Sweet Home? Out of slavery? But was it worth it? Was her sacrifice worth the pain she had caused?…
