Ever since the beginning of time, women were believed to need a man. If a women did not have a man she was considered weak and unwanted. Many believe that a woman's role is in the household. She is supposed to be able to cook, clean, and take care of children, and if she does not possess these trait, she is considered undesirable. A woman is subjugated to sexism in many aspects of her life as she is viewed as less able than her fellow man. …show more content…
Specifically, in the show, Mad Man, the actors show how a women’s credentials are not taken seriously in the workplace because she is a woman.
One of the agents make advertisements for a women and suggests she tries to attract a normal housewife. The owner of the company becomes mad because she is trying to attract her business towards wealthier customers and wants respect from the agent. While, the advertisement agent becomes very angry that a woman would dare talk to him like that in a commanding way. The show, Mad Men, is set from the time period 1950-1960’s which explains some of the sexism that would not be tolerated in today’s world. Although, a woman owning a business was considered such an absurd idea that the only other people the agent believed would be attracted to it was women. The woman had a hard time because the agent did not have any respect for her or her business because she was a
woman.
Education is another place where women are not considered equal to men. In the United States, it is only in recent years that women have gotten the credentials and respect to go into higher levels of education. My mom, who is only forty- six, was the first women in our family to get a higher education than a high school diploma. My grandmother dropped out of college to marry my grandfather while my other grandma did not go at all and ended up doing the desk job of being a secretary.
Again, Mad Men shows a good example of how women were to do desk jobs and not take on anything too big. Peggy Olson starts a new career in Manhattan as a secretary to a big advertisement company. However, her position as a secretary is not about her education or capabilities it is about how she looks and her sex appeal. An older women in the office gives Peggy advice on how to appeal to the men in the office which will led to success in the office and a good marriage. The prime focus of a women doing a job was not for long term success but for her to end up with a family.
Therefore, women are considered weak and they have been throughout history.Although, in the 20th - 21st century women have worked together to prove this stereotype wrong. Since women have started working together to prove that they can do more than be just a housewife, people have given them greater respect. It all started on August 18th, 1920 when the 19th amendment was passed to grant women the right to vote. Ever since then, women all over worked together to try and give themselves the rights they deserve. Throughout the World Wars, women started to work themselves on the homefront while men were out fighting the war. Also, during the Civil Rights movement many women were heavily involved in it because them as well we're still fighting for some freedoms. Then, in the 1980’s women finally started to go to higher levels of education than just a GED. All these successes have granted women respect from others which has proven that they are independent and capable beings.
Similarly, women are not expected to be the primary caretakers of the house. In today’s world, the men have to do some of the cooking and cleaning alongside the women. My dad spends Saturday mornings making pancakes while my mom sits at the table reading the newspaper. Fifty years ago, this would have been looked down on greatly because this should be a woman's job. But today, men join in on the daily housekeeping chores and even in some instances are stay at home dad’s, while the women are the primary source of income.
In addition, a recent study that I read has indicated that women now hold over 60% of bachelor's degrees. This increase in degrees has only happened in the last forty years, however it has allowed women to be more respected in the workplace. Having a bachelor degree also opens opportunities for women to complete even higher levels of educations. Women have now worked in fields such as a medicine, lawyers, teachers, and other well respected occupations. It is as common to go a women doctor as it is a man.
Unless, if a women lives in a different country because they are not as advanced as the United States. Women in different countries still struggle with basic human rights. A famous women activists, Malala Yousafzai, describes her struggles as she got shot in the head by the Taliban because she encouraged Pakistani girls to go to school and get an education. In the United States, this would not be acceptable because women are required to get an education. Another examples is in in the Arab world, women are required to follow everything their husbands want from them. They are not allowed to go out in public without their headdress and a male escort. It is very strict and if they do not follow these rules, their life can be threatened. Other ways that a women in the Middle East are weaker than their male counterparts is that they are not allowed to wear clothes or makeup that shows their beauty or interact with males not related to them. All these things are allowed in the United States which allow women to keep achieving their rights but in other countries women are not as lucky.
Overall, women throughout history have been considered as weak next to males. The stereotype is that a women needs a man and without a man, a woman is weak. However, in the United States women have slowly been given equal rights because of the opportunities that have presented themselves in the last hundred years. Women have gone from being housewives with minimal rights and hopes to strong, independent women who have many options for their lives. If women had not fought for the right a hundred years ago for suffrage, would we still have the same progress today with women’s right?
