Some colleges, such as Dartmouth, have adopted a policy that requires incoming students to take a course on healthy relationships and ways to prevent and respond to misconduct. If students were required to take a course on sexual assault, students will be educated on how to prevent and respond to sexual assault which would decrease the chances of sexual assault occurring on campus.
Although a majority of sexual assault survivors feel more comfortable seeking help through their college rather than the police, students often find some college’s actions are insufficient. Students have reported colleges blaming the victim in sexual assault causes and allowing those responsible to remain involved in athletics and college events. Colleges should be required to conduct anonymous student surveys every few months to be aware of the amount of sexual assault cases on campus and be held responsible for finding solutions.
As methods to approaching issues regarding campus sexual assault continue to evolve, setting procedures in place to prevent sexual assault on college campuses is beneficial for the college and the student population. Well- designed practices implemented in college policy strengthen the safety and respect aspects within the student body. With an increase in sexual assault cases on college campuses in the United States, colleges should aim their focus at reducing the use of drugs and alcohol on campus, educating the student body on sexual assault, and adopting more effective procedures when handling sexual assault
