In the American literary landscape the span of ‘Romantic Period’ also known as the ‘American Renaissance’ was from 1828 till 1865. Romanticism is crucial to American society, to the degree that the very making of the United States has been viewed as a representation of a romantic thought. It was the focal development of the American Renaissance, being most promptly interceded through introspective philosophy or transcendentalism, and it keeps on applying a significant impact on American thought and composing. The years between 1865 t0 1900 are often known as the ‘Realistic Period’. Although Wilcox’s works were diverse, yet they are often labeled ‘realistic’ in contrast to the ‘romances’ of her predecessors in prose fiction or novels. It presented ‘a slice of life’ and is defined as the faithful representation of life which was also a reaction against Romanticism.
Wilcox is best known for her poem “Solitude”, which encompasses the reality of War and also establishes her as a popular poet of the masses. In her poems resonates the plight of both men and women, growing through the mental and physical consequences of the reality of life which was transforming drastically. Her poems not only address the changing landscapes but also the psychological fragmentation of the masses. Peace was not anymore available rather people were striving for it.
