Shakespeare Influence On Romeo And Juliet
On November 3rd, I saw the Herndon Middle School Production What’s in a Name. I saw the play after school and enjoyed many aspects of the production itself. My favorite recurring theme, however, was the Shakespearean influence throughout. The first influence can be seen in the title. What’s in a name reminded me of the Balcony scene in Shakespeare’s famous work Romeo and Juliet. In that scene, Juliet says
“What's in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet”.
The reason she says this because she doesn’t care about the fact that Romeo comes from the Montague lineage. This title played well into the production, because it had a theme of family heritage and ancestry. Another Shakespeare-based element I noticed was that, after each scene, there was a prologue. The prologues were said by a chorus. Shakespeare had a prologue in the beginning of plays and between scenes, such as the prologues in Romeo and Juliet, and King Henry VIII . The quote “If it can be written or thought, it can be

The earthy colors of the backdrop and minimal costumes helped me enjoy the show, as I felt like it was a scene unfolding in front of me, not a practiced, scripted show. I really understood what the quote “One must suspend their disbelief to rise above reality” meant, because if I put aside the fact that the people on stage are actors, I lived vicariously through the actors and felt like I was actually inside the scene.

Some of the more “technical” things I noticed about the acting is how the actors cheated out to the audience instead of facing away and blocking the audience’s view. They also used the stage space well, as they didn’t all just group together in center stage but moved around a lot. There were no asides, so no one broke the fourth wall.

All in all What’s in a name was an amazing production, from the Shakespeare references, to the acting. I enjoyed it, and if given the chance, I would definitely see it

The producers couldn’t have hired better actors for the roles of Thomas and Victor and the script was as if it wasn’t even a script. It seemed like it just came so naturally to the characters. If someone came to me asking for examples of a movie with really good acting, I would probably recommend this movie, but otherwise. I would say not to waste your time and watch something more enjoyable, like the romantic comedy “The Wedding…

However, in spite of the many differences, there are similarities between the two stories. Romeo and Juliet and “Teen Couple Executed by their Parents…for daring to fall in love,” both involve the deaths of the couples all happening at a young age, all of them dying before the age of 19 before any of their parents died. Throughout both stories a common factor is that the couples were forced to make adult decisions about their lives and love lives; while, the adults around them were making many poor decisions. Unlike many love stories where the strong, handsome male saves the damsel in distress, the female protagonists in both of these stories appeared to be stronger than their male counterparts. Maybe that is why when the time came, both mothers…

In every person’s life there are many factors that occur throughout, both negative and positive influences that alter the path one chooses. In the world renowned play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, the tragic outcome is brought about by the lovers’ trusted friend, Friar Lawrence. To begin with, Friar Lawrence is to blame for setting the events into motion by marrying Romeo and Juliet. Then, Friar Lawrence is responsible for Juliet receiving the potion that causes everyone to believe that she is truly dead. Finally, Friar Lawrence could have prevented the two deaths by simply making sure that Romeo gets the message as he assured Juliet he would. So ultimately, Friar Lawrence is responsible for the star crossed lovers’ demise, because they wrongly trust the Friar and his influence causes Romeo and Juliet to make all the wrong decisions thus bringing about their downfall.…

Though when I saw the play for the first time, I realized that the set that I saw was only a small part of the entire set. In addition to the the pox house that was set up with an amazing amount of detail with all of the little trinkets on the shelves, the lights and sound effects also added to the level of greatness. The colors of the lights would accurately match the mood of a scene or set the tone. This is essentially what lights are supposed to do in a play, but it is sometimes overlooked in small school productions. With regards to the sound effects, I was a bit taken aback by the real life aspect of it.…

They play was quite an interesting play with its use of comedy and tragedy. The actors did a terrific job on portraying the characters. The set was small so it was much easier to see their reactions. The introduction to the play was pretty unique with those people in tight pants and glitter all over everybody in the lobby. They never broke character no matter what went on in the lobby. Later they used as prompts on stage which was pretty interesting because at times I was so into the play I forgot they were there acting as a car or a door.…

The theme of Romeo and Juliet is about a consuming love. It is a play filled with hatred overcome by love. Old hate versus young love, who take no thought for the past or future. With this love ending by “love-devouring death.” The hatred overcame the young love and left the two in love desperate, thinking death was the only way to be together.…

When Lady Capulet and the nurse are trying to persuade Juliet to marry Paris, Juliet says, “I’ll look to like, if looking liking move/ But no more deep will I endart mine eye/ Than your consent gives strength to make [it] fly”(1.3.103-105). This symbolism of Juliet’s eye is used to represent sight as a whole. Juliet’s sight represents her thinking about marriage, as it was quite common for preteens and teenagers to get married in the Shakespearean Era. In addition, Shakespeare uses alliteration to place more focus on the quote. The alliteration develops the theme because it puts focus on how even though society and Juliet’s family wants her to get married, Juliet decides to take her time and explore her feelings. Juliet’s desire for independence can be seen in her conversation with her mother when she only agrees to consider marriage because her parents want her to. Since Juliet decides to take her time, she meets Romeo at the Capulet party and realizes that they are meant to be together, which shows that Juliet’s defiance of society’s expectations leads to her finding her true soulmate. As the play progresses, Shakespeare uses more literary devices to highlight Romeo’s lack of dependence on his family. When Romeo secretly goes to the Capulet house to see Juliet after the party, Juliet says, “Tis but thy name that is my enemy./Thou art thyself, though not a Montague”(2.2.41-42). Shakespeare uses an extended metaphor to highlight the conflict between their families. When Juliet refers to Romeo’s last name as their problem, she is talking about the tension between the Montague and Capulet families that prevents Romeo and Juliet from being openly together. Preventing Romeo from using his last name gives him freedom to be his own person around Juliet without any ties to their families and…

This quote proves that although Romeo and Juliet are so close through their love, their family names still make them so far apart. The stage setting and special effects intertwined in elegance and awe. It was very well organised and clearly was thought through for weeks, even months! The lighting was so effective, while adding flavour to Beyoncé’s performance and still managed to keep the focus on her! My favourite special effect though was when a guitarist (who rocked everyone’s socks off by the way) came out of nowhere and had sparks coming out of it, while Beyoncé was right beside it showing off the vast variety of pitches she can belt out. I was captivated.…
