Sheldon Little League Reflection
During 2016 I was taking 12-15 hours of college per semester but still was able to volunteer at the Sheldon Little League. I was voted onto the Board of Directors as the T-Ball Player agent and was in charge of the whole division. I conducted tryout, team drafts, trained coaches and mentored students. I also assisted with registration, concessions, score keeping and field maintenance when

Elementary schools are looking for volunteers to help students with reading and math. I feel I could not only tutor the students, but lead them by example, befriend them and also instill values of NJHS by setting a good example. Last year, after the house explosion in Firestone, my friends and I held a lemonade stand to raise money for the affected families. We were able to raise over two hundred dollars. I feel that by taking the initiative to get out and help I can make a difference in my community.…

The first references of the game started back in the eighteenth century. Many games like “rounders” and “cricket” were some of the games that influenced baseball. Furthermore, in September of 1845, a group of men founded the New York Knickerbocker Baseball Club. One of the founders, Alexander Joy Cartwright, established a new set of rules that would later shape the game into the modern day version. He set rules like, having a diamond-shaped infield, foul lines, and the notorious “3 strikes and you’re out.” Also while making new rules he eliminated some too. Cartwright made the game safer by eliminating rules like tagging a runner by throwing the ball at them. These changes made the game safer, but also made it faster paced and more challenging.…

Since I was 7 years old, I have always participated in Greenwich’s very own Cardinal Baseball Camp. However, until last summer, I had always been one of the campers. This year I was an official volunteer of the camp. Everyday from 8 a.m. till 12 p.m., me and approximately 30 other staff members at the camp would teach young kids how to play baseball. This camp is run very locally, and it is very personalized, something that should truly be valued in a large town like Greenwich. Although not perfect, this is the best camp in town, and it will continue to stay that way as it continues to improve itself. The Greenwich Cardinal Baseball Camp is a very effective place for kids to go and not only learn the game of baseball, but meet new friends,…

Often times you see athletes performing dominating blocks, making big hits, or making acrobatic catches. However, athletes have much more to offer off their respective playing surfaces that goes unseen. Here at Henderson State University athletes are supposed to epitomize what a college student in Arkadelphia should be. We’re depended upon to be campus leaders to our peers and set examples verbally as well as through our actions. Sometimes we’re seen as intimidating individuals do to our outer appearance but we’re empathetic to others just as others. Our athletic program is set on allowing our athletes to give back to our community and school through participation in various events that occur throughout the calendar year. By providing opportunities for student-athletes to serve, these young men and women make meaningful contributions to society. Teams as well as individual student-athletes are involved in numerous charity and community organizations, schools and hospitals. Some student-athletes have also created, initiated and implemented service projects/activities. One specific event, Reddie to Serve, allows us just this amble opportunity to show our gratitude and appreciation back to the citizens of…

James Petersen very simply uses “five major divisions” (Petersen 2007, 8) to assist us in learning how to communicate better. A very big focus in doing this is to encourage listening skills in all parties. The first is his concept of “the flat-brain theory of emotions” (Petersen, 10) in which he talks about the emotions associated with the stomach, the heart and the head and how they are to work together to change our behavior. “One simple theory of behavior suggests that we humans move from a state of bother to a state of calm….We get curious(bothered), we jump on the internet…(behavior), we get the info, and we relax (calm).”(15). This is when all three are working correctly and communicating well. Petersen discusses why these do not always work correctly in the world stage. In this same section he discusses communication as two levels. “Level one communication gives and receives information and discusses points of view.”(18). “Level two goes deeper than words. It moves us toward more satisfying relationships.”(19). He also brings up two ideas, “the flat-brain syndrome”(23) and the “flat-brain tango”(33). The flat-brain…

Within my school, I am also a member of the Bass fishing team, Volunteens, and National Honor Society (NHS). I have been a member of my high school bass fishing team for all four years of high school. On the team I compete in tournaments each spring to earn a spot on the post season roster. Members of the team are also required to sell raffle tickets to pay for our shirts and other expenses. My freshman year on the team I was one of the top sellers, selling over one-hundred tickets and have continued selling as many as possible. I discovered that the best way is to sell the tickets at our high school boys basketball home games and at the community fish fries. Volunteering in my community is also very important to me, and because of this I joined the Volunteens at my school. With the Volunteens I have helped with the paper…

At the same time, I also help out at Lakeview men’s soccer tryout. My position was to keep track of the player’s stats. A lot of times, I would get instructions from the head coach to set up drills for the players, and I would set up the drills. I’m excellent with following instructions. I must always be very responsible and well rounded to keep up with school, homework, practice, my social life, and my family. As exhausting as it is to stay fully devoted to this game there are many rewards. Softball has taught me about several valuable life lessons that will follow me through the rest of my life which include; teamwork, perseverance, responsibility, good sportsmanship, determination, faith, friendship, love, and so much more. Although I am very thankful for now possessing these qualities, the biggest way my dedication to softball would give back to me is by landing me a scholarship to play softball at a college. To be able to play at college level in a sport I have dedicated my whole life and worked so hard at would be a dream come true and such an accomplishment to know that I have finally made it. Through all the sweat, blood, and tears. The scorching heat, or the freezing cold, or the endless hours of practicing. It will have all been worth it in the end because I ended up exactly where I’ve always wanted to be; which is on a college softball field. I can just imagine it now. All the cheering fans and the television broadcasters as they film the game live for all to see on ESPN; the bright sun that beats down on us as we stand on the brown dirt and green…

I have volunteered at a local hospital since my sophomore year of high school. I received a wide range of opportunities, from meeting family members at different areas of the hospital, to volunteering in the emergency room, to also giving comfort to families in the hospice. In addition, I am very culturally oriented and try to be active in the Indian community. Every summer, I volunteer at an Indian Saturday school which I have attended since kindergarten. I teach students the Indian customs and Hindu religion, as well as how to further their reading and writing skills in Sanskrit. I was responsible for these children for a whole week, and took care of them as if they were my siblings. I spend my free time teaching kids how to do Indian classical dance. I love being active and able to give back to my community as much as I can, and I would love to broaden my experience throughout the…
