Sherman Alexie Quotes
“I throw my weight against their locked doors. The doors hold. I am smart. I am arrogant. I am lucky. I am trying to save our lives.” What does this quote from Sherman Alexie's “Superman and Me” mean? First, the quote should be broken down into fragments. “I throw my weight against their locked doors. The doors hold.” In this part of the quote Alexie is talking about the “...sullen and already defeated Indian kids who sit in the back rows and ignore me with theatrical precision.” He is telling about how he tries over and over to teach them, but they don’t want to learn. They have shut him out and locked their metaphorical doors. The text states, “I am smart. I am arrogant. I am lucky.” In this part of the quote it uses a lot of repetition,

    Mr Jones Grotesque Quotes

    • 520 Words
    • 3 Pages

Now, as we’d expect from the southern gothic setting, Mr. Jones is indeed a great example of the grotesque. He is not only physically abnormal but also a character capable of fantastic transformation. Jone’s is described as “blind, and crippled”(Capote 14). His “legs had been denied him by a childhood accident, and he couldn’t move without crutches” (Capote 14). This abnormal physicality set him apart from the norm. He is not only unable to move “without crutches” but he is also unable to see where he is going. Of course, this physical abnormality fits the description of the grotesque in its entirety, but the gothiness of Jones is not over yet. Jones is seen by Capote later in the story while he is on a subway car in Moscow. Capote recognizes…

    Marcus Aurelius Quotes

    • 278 Words

The quote I chose is, “The best revenge is not to become like the one who wronged you.” Marcus Aurelius came up with this quote. I think this quote means that if you do something back to a person that has wronged you, you’re just stooping down to their level and giving them satisfaction. But, if you don’t get revenge on them and don’t stoop to their level, it’ll be revenge within itself because it shows them that you’re the bigger person. A real word example would be, the United States and terrorists. If the United States got revenge and stooped to the terrorists level, we would most likely be in a war or in bad shape as a country. I also feel like this quote means to become a better person after someone has wronged you. Don’t become like someone…
