These are 5 factors that were mentioned throughout our text book “The Leadership Experience” and also through Sheryl Sandberg’s book “Lean In”. Each one of these characteristics are key components that help build relationships in the workplace or in your personal life. Being able to build great relationships within the workplace can create an atmosphere for success. Positive relationships through the office can positively affect your satisfaction with the job, your ability to advance, and gain recognition for your achievements. When an employer has a good relationship in the office and employees tend to work harder towards the ultimate goal of the company. The hiring process is so important for a manager because they are given the opportunity to find people with great talents and also find employees that can fit in the culture. When you build positive relationships, people feel more comfortable with interacting and less intimidated by others. You feel a closer bond to the people you spend the majority of your time working with and are willing to go the extra mile for those people. Which just goes to show why building relationships are so important. The more we get along with someone, the better we are at collaborating and working together. Human relationships thrive when individuals can combine their skills and talents, and successfully create something greater than the sum of their parts. These are the people in your life that have been through what you are going through and a lot of times are where you want to be in your future. Building relationships with a mentor is very important for your success. Most successful people have a mentor that has helped and guided them to where they are now. One thing we have learned about building relationships and mentors, is that you should not actively search for a mentor instead, a mentor will find you if you are excelling and they see potential in you. Sheryl said “I believe we have sent the wrong message to young women. We need to stop telling them, Get a mentor and you will excel. Instead, we need to tell them, excel and you will get a mentor. (Sandberg, 2013, pg .68)” I think this is applicable to every aspect in life, successful people want to hire and work with people that have a drive and the capable to be successful one day.
Throughout “Lean In”, Sheryl spoke about the importance of being in positive relationships in every aspect of your career. You must build positive relations with people that can hire you in the future. Having positive relationships in our life increases our sense of purpose and meaning which will have a real positive effect on someone else’s life. Through these positive relationships, we fulfill our need of making a significant difference in the world. Making a difference in the world starts from the small actions of building
