Unfortunately in today's society there have been many cases of over breeding for this dog which has created temperament problems in their bloodlines, leading to inconsistent behavior. Pit Bulls over bred today are usually used to fight illegally in run down urban areas or are kept outside and are used to guard junkyards, people's houses or private property. The over breeding of these dogs led to people housing them that were not qualified to handle this breed. Though they do not get overly large they have a body mass that can weigh up to 90 pounds, and a lockjaw with 800 pounds of pressure. These dogs are very smart, but require a lot of care and attention. The Pit Bull will also learn to imitate the behavior of its owner. People who neglect these dogs or use aggressive force to train them will often have an aggressive dog likely to turn and attack. When kept in safe living conditions and trained properly these dogs are excellent family pets with a natural guard dog instinct to protect its…

The existence of animals has been vital to the very development of mankind. Through hunting, fishing, and domestication of certain breeds, man has learned to live, for the most part at least, alongside these creatures. One case in particular, the domesticated wolf and modern-day dog (Canis lupus familiaris) has become a cornerstone of modern families, with an estimated forty-six percent of American households owning at least one dog (Humane Society). Some dogs, like the dogs known as pit-bulls, tend to have a negative implication surrounding them. This idea that pit-bulls are aggressive and dangerous stems from the fact that there are owners who train the dog to be vicious, and to attack, and certain myths surrounding the breed. This has led to the negative reputation that surrounds the breeds commonly classified as pit bulls.…

Should people be allowed to keep pit bull dogs? Pit bull dogs seem to come up in many news topics, and it always seems to be bad news. Nine times out of ten when a dog is in the news it seems to be bad mouthing pit bulls, the news never shows the good side to the breed, which there are a lot of good things about the dogs. As a owner and someone who know many people who own the breed, I strongly disagree. Every breed has the potential to be aggressive and will at some point have at least one instance that another breed will do something bad. I was skeptical about the breed when I was first given the puppy, but now I would never trade her for the world.…

An Anonymous author stated, “Pitbull’s are beauty without vanity, strength without insolence, courage without ferocity, and all the virtues of man without the vices.” (Anonymous) As a Pitbull owner, I feel that Pitbull’s are often misunderstood animals. In reality any animal, pitbull or even a Chihuahua can be mean or gentle. Love and caring wins out with animals just like it does with humans. Affection is what creates a good or bad dog. Not their type of breed or genetic makeup.…

American motivational speaker Wayne Dyer once said, “Judgments prevent us from seeing the good that lies beyond appearances.” (Dyer, 2012). This quote holds true in relation to the public’s perception of “pit bull” type dogs. Pit bulls are often judged by their muscular bodies, large head, and strong jaws. Pit bulls are consistently portrayed in the media as aggressive as well. Because of this, pit bulls face a variety of different obstacles to overcome. From breed specific legislation (BSL), to dog fighting, to homelessness and euthanasia, the list of obstacles to overcome may seem impossible. However, “Experts say that five factors affect a dog 's tendency to bite: owner quality (quality of care, level of supervision provided); degree to which the dog has been habituated to people; training received (level and type); behavior of the victim; and genetic predisposition to be dangerously aggressive” (Pet Owner Liability, 2001).Only through education on the true nature of the breed and promotion of responsible ownership can pit bulls be helped.…

It is understood that most people have come in contact with a pit bull at some point in their lifetime and, in some cases, they were positive experiences. Many people argue that the pit bulls in which they have met were always very sweet dogs. This may be true, however, pit bulls have displayed their ability to viciously snap without warning. Warning signs were culled out of their genes to make them the most effective at fighting other dogs. Pit bull owners who had witnessed their beloved pet lash out in violent ways often say the dog had no history of violence and the attack seemed completely out of the blue. A man by the name of Randall Lockwood who is an expert in dog behavior says the fighting dogs lie. "Fighting dogs lie all the time. I experienced it first hand when I was investigating…
