Bernie Sanders: Make America Great Again Bernie Sanders started off his career as the mayor of Burlington, Vermont. Mr. Sanders served four terms of acting mayor. Adding to his government occupation list, Bernie distinguished himself as one of the country’s few independent legislators.…
Bernie Sanders believes a tax on Wall Street trading would provide plenty of money to pay for state run universities, allowing affordable higher education for all American citizens. The tax would be called the financial transactions tax (FTT) and would consist of stock trades taxed at .05%, Bonds at .01% and lastly financial derivatives at .005%. In the article by Bob Davis, Can Bernie Sanders’s Tax Plan Fund Free Collage, he writes, “Figuring out how both sides come up with their estimates is crucial to understanding whether Sen. Sanders is economically deluded or a visionary. Mr. Sanders’s economic advisers and the TPC have been fighting over these estimates since at least last fall, and have fired recent salvos (Davis 1). ” Whether or not this plan works relies heavily on how the revenue is estimated. Davis mentions Robert Pollin, an economist at the University of Amherst, who estimates 3 trillion in revenue towards the program in the next ten years that would be more than enough for Sanders 750…
debates have occurred regularly and are becoming institutionalized as a practice in American elections. Third-party candidates have fewer chances to join presidential debates, especially if the two major party candidates do not agree to debate them. Unless it becomes in the interest of both parties to have a third-party candidate debate, as it was in 1992 with Ross Perot, it will be very difficult for third-party candidates to become a part of the presidential debates. Even though third parties have debated each other in presidential election years, the fate of third parties in receiving national coverage or joining the two major party candidates in presidential debates is uncertain. It is also unclear how much effect debates have on American…
As 2016 is a presidential election year, many people routinely are exposed to the major party candidates. This election season is historic, because never have the two major party candidates been so disliked. Unfortunately, most Americans will not understand that they can vote for someone other than a Democrat or Republican. The Libertarian Party is the third largest and fastest growing political party in the United States. Due to the disdain of the major parties by large number of the electorate, Gary Johnson and the Libertarians have seen the greatest support in the history of their party.…
Many of us ask ourselves “Why vote for Bernie Sander?”. Many may argue that Bernie Sanders is way too old to be President, but truth is that the older they are the wiser they are. Bernie Sanders has stated that he’ll change many things, but that’s what every candidate says, the real question is will he has really done everything he has said he’ll change? Bernie Sanders has stated that he’ll change the minimum wage to $15, do public college free/affordable, universal healthcare, transform our energy system, overturns citizens united, end the war on drugs, rebuild our crumbling infrastructure, raise taxes on the 1%, stop endless military spending, expand social security, end police brutality and demilitarize the police.…
Sanders strongly believes that everyone deserves to receive an affordable, high-quality education. He has sponsored bills to make public to make all public colleges tuition free. Not only does he believe that too many resources are wasted on over-incarnation and unlawful arrests, he also is an advocate for police reform, as well as the demilitarization of America’s police forces. He is also a major supporter of making the minimum wage a living wage. While the cost of living has skyrocketed workers’ wages haven’t changed much, and he believes that people working forty hours a week for minimum wage should not being living in poverty. Sanders has before stated that we are a “nation of immigrants” and wants to reform the immigration policy to create an obtainable path to citizenship.…
Roller interviewed more than 30 protest voters. The voters said they believe that both Mr. Trump and Mrs. Clinton are comparably repulsive candidates, while others believed that they are two sides of the same coin. These voters believed their vote as a way, putting an end to power from the two untrustworthy parties. (cite). Also their vote is their way of giving a message to the parties. Their vote tells the candidates what the voters care about, what concerns them, and what they want. The candidates should do as Roller said, “Better to at least try to sweep them back under the big tent than cast them into the wilderness.” (Cite). Meaning the major party candidates better listen up if they want the votes instead of letting the third party candidates from taking them all or even worse the voters not voting at all. Third party candidates are pressing hard for votes as they look to gain funding that could then make them a legitimate threat to the candidacy. Much can be said that there is an increase in the younger generation voting third party. These voters will be voting for many years to come and do not believe in the same rational or party lines as their parents before them. They are free thinking individuals that want their voices heard. Protest voters are executing their democratic right to vote for who they…
Socialism is described as “a social and economic system characterized by social ownership of the means of production and co-operative management of the economy, as well as a political theory and movement that aims at the establishment of such a system” (Wikipedia, 2014). Socialist economic systems are based on the precept of production for use or the production of goods to directly satisfy the demand and need of the consumer (Wikipedia, 2014). Accumulation of capital and production for profit are not valuable to the socialist movement. Socialist referred to themselves differently around the world, but in America the word “socialist” never stuck (Martin, 2006). Instead, they referred to themselves as liberals just as we refer to the Democrat Party today. They also used the euphuism “democracy” to replace “socialism” making it more acceptable to western society (Worldviews from the 1870s to the Modern Era [DOC document]). “In 1932, the Fabian socialists took over the Democrat Party, making it their political vehicle and, therefore, in the United States, it is the Democrat Party which is the vehicle for socialism” (Martin, 2006).…
Political parties rose to prominence while others faded into history, but gradually the Republican Party and the Democratic Party rose to occupy the two positions within the party system of the United States all the way into the contemporary era. However, while a two-party system is designed to discourage the rise of alternative third parties, there have been occasions where third parties have risen to challenge the Republicans and Democrats for one of their positions within the political system (Jackson, J. S., 2015). The range of successes of the third party challengers of Republican and Democrat hegemony has varied greatly with some parties managing to secure office in local offices, others having members of their party within the national government, and others managing to split either the voter base of the dominant parties such as in the election of…
Imagine a scenario where education is not the main problem to the states anymore and everyone has a decent job. Jill Stein, a nominee for President of United States, has good intentions for America. Her main goal is to solve the problems that America face and change the broken political system. As the staff of Green Valley Middle School, you should vote for Jill Stein because she believes that unemployment and poverty should end. Jill Stein supports equality for everyone, she values the protection of women and children. Her platforms can make America successful again: Promoting equal rights and maintaining the economy are some of them.…
Even from the earliest points in his life, Bernie Sanders has been a powerful example of bravery. Born to Polish immigrants in 1941, Sanders was not blessed with prosperous childhood years, as he grew up in a cramped Brooklyn apartment. However, during these early years the future senator and now presidential candidate began to form an interest in the political world. In an interview with the Guardian newspaper, he proclaimed, “I saw unfairness. That was the major inspiration in my politics.” (bio) Being surrounded by economic and social disparity, Sanders decided to transcend and battle his way through the obstacles presented before him. During his time at the University of Chicago, he became an active leader in the Civil Rights movement, assisting in the organization of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. Reflecting on his call to action, the senator states,…
The emergence of the second party system in the United States is a dynamic piece of our political history. This term was used as a way of stating the political party systems during the time period of the early/middle 1800’s. Due to separate views and rapidly rising voting interest, this is where the United States ultimately split into the Democratic and Whig Party. Although both parties were still growing at the time, both devised many major philosophies and had very important political figures as their leader.…
Despite the challenges they face, third parties still make important contributions to the political system. One contribution is that they have the ability to split one party’s vote so that the opposing party wins. For example, because Ross Perot was able to split the republican vote George Bush lost the presidency to democrat Bill Clinton. Third parties also have the ability to shift national attention to a particular policy. Third parties usually revolve around a single issue or concern, which forces candidates of major parties to discuss those topics. “For example, segregationist American Independent Party candidate George Wallace…
The American Dream is something that is unique to America, there is no European Dream or the Canadian Dream, just the American Dream — something Alexis de Tocqueville referred to as American exceptionalism. For centuries, people have flocked to the United States in hopes to attain the prosperity that this country offers. At a time where political figures and the new generations of Americans are leaning further and further towards the idea of Socialism, it is more important now than ever to remember why the founding fathers of this country worked so hard for to build the foundation of which makes this country so unique. And why so many people died trying to make their way to Ellis Island. Today, a self-proclaimed Democratic Socialist is running…
There has been a long history of minor party candidates running for President, starting with the Anti-Masonic Party led by William Whit in 1832, and ending with the Reformist Party led by Ross Perot in 1996.…
