Should Students Be Required To Keep Cell Phones In School
Seventy-three percent of students say they keep their phones on them during detentions according to the Journal. Many kids say they feel safer when they have their cell phones on them. If you keep your phone in your bag during detention, then students would have their phones with them. Also, if they have to keep their phone in their bag they would not get distracted. The rules giving your phone to the teacher during detentions or Friday school should be changed to keep it in your backpack so people would feel more safe.

The rule is that you have to give your phone to the adult in charge of the detention. “Students attending detentions, Friday classes, study tables, in school suspensions, etc…will relinquish their cell phone to the supervisor or principal for the duration of the session.” The

The reason for this rule is for the kids to stay on topic. They also may go on non related school topics such as games, social media, or texting. However, if they put it in their book bag they would not get distracted by their phone. The principal may disagree because they could be tempted to go on their phone and not get any work done. However, if you keep them on topic then they wouldn’t think about going on their phones. If you put some restrictions on them having their phones out, then they may not be tempted to go on their phones.

“Students should keep their phones in their book bags during detentions, Friday school, school suspensions, etc..” The reason for this new rule is for safety reasons. If a kid had a family emergency and their parent couldn't contact the school, then the student may not know where to go after their detention or Friday school. If they just put their phone in their backpack it would not be a distraction to them. If they where to put it in their bag, then they would not be using it. In order to make it work you would have to put some rules to having

There is more than one side to the debate about cell phone availability during school. One claim is that students should be allowed to have their phones on them and use their cell phones during appropriate times. In the article, the authors provide details about how there are numerous reasons why cell phones should be allowed during school. Students should be allowed access to cell phones, because if they are responsible enough to be going off to college in a year or so, they should be responsible enough to have a cell phone on them and use it wisely (George and Cook). Another reason why cell phones should be allowed in school is because otherwise it can create a divide between the students and the teachers. One reason why teachers and administrators ban the use of phones is because they believe that students wouldn’t pay attention and wouuldn’t be able to learn what they’re talking about. I disagree with this because mostly everyone at Jenks secretly checks their phones in every class. Even people making straight A’s in AP classes check them.…

"The ban, which was implemented by the Bloomberg administration, went into effect in 2006, but Mayor Bill De Blasio championed the policy change, saying that he thought it was important for parents to be able to easily contact their kids." (Kiema) Some teachers think it would be nice if cell phones weren't allowed in school but since they are they should use them to their advantage. As soon as the new policy is in place starting in March, individual schools in New York City will be able to establish their own policies concerning cell phone use in the classroom, leaving many teachers to determine how they will react to the phones in hallways and classrooms. Students should be aloud to have their phones because it is also a way for parents to contact their kids during school hours or vice versa. It should also be aloud if the students have practice and then it got cancelled so they would have to call their parents and tell them about the change in plans. Truth is that some schools are open to the cell phone idea and some aren't.…

I strongly agree that cell phones should be allowed on school grounds. I have two reasons to support my opinion. First having cell phones can be a helpful learning tool to teachers. Max Gold supported my opinion. He stated “By using texting as a positive tool instead of a means of distraction educators can now have student’s text in the answers that the students have questions on. Also Greenberg High School stated “The Students who have a smart phone can use various applications that are designed to assist in learning and designed just for students. Many of these smart phones have programs that are similar to what is found in a laptop or desktop computer. Being able to quickly look up facts on the internet is possible on many phones. If a student needs assistance with class work and does not have access to a computer, a smart phone can be used in a snap. Also most private schools allow cell phones. In private schools the prevailing view is that cell phones are here to stay. They are an essential line of communication between frantically busy parents and their children. As a result, most private schools allow cell phones on their premises with the understanding that phones must be turned off during class and only used under certain conditions and in specified places. Most schools have very specific guidelines written into their handbooks and acceptable use policy manuals. All students agree to abide by those rules both while on the school premises and also while under the school's jurisdiction when off campus. second opinion is parents can keep in contact with their children. Maya Cohen supported this reason by stating that “Cell phones create a convenience that was previously unavailable. With cell phones, you…

They say that to be able to use phone students need to learn how to use them appropriately. One of the main reasons for this rule is cheating on tests. Staff worries that if students have access to their phones during tests they will use them to their advantage, this is also why some teachers do not allow students to listen to music during a test. Students may also take advantage of these situations and go on social media, text friends, and use their phone inappropriately. Students can also get distracted if they are on their phones during a lesson. They could text a friend and if they reply back the phone could make a noise or it could vibrate and not only distract the student who's phone it is, but the whole class. Teachers say that if students want to be able to use their phones more they need to learn how to use their phones appropriately and responsibly. There can be lots of problems with phones at school but if students use them responsibly there will be little to no problems at all.…
