The reason for this rule is for the kids to stay on topic. They also may go on non related school topics such as games, social media, or texting. However, if they put it in their book bag they would not get distracted by their phone. The principal may disagree because they could be tempted to go on their phone and not get any work done. However, if you keep them on topic then they wouldn’t think about going on their phones. If you put some restrictions on them having their phones out, then they may not be tempted to go on their phones.

If a kid had a family emergency and their parent couldn't contact the school, then the student may not know where to go after their detention or Friday school. If they just put their phone in their backpack it would not be a distraction to them. If they where to put it in their bag, then they would not be using it.
