Every avid newspaper reader opened their eyes in surprise on December 17th, after reading “U.S determined to normalize relations with Cuba”. This inspired lots of emotions around the world, from hatred to joy, from indignation to admiration, it has been a really shocking move by Obama. However, a questions remains: If the US normalizes relations with Cuba, will they still be in the Terrorist Supporting Countries list? An article from the Heritage Foundation gives us a heavy conservative point of view. While the Heritage gives us reasons to believe we should not trust Cuba and that they should remain on the terrorist supporting countries list, they have no real argument to consider Cuba a supporter of terrorism or a valid reason to keep them on the list.
This article by Ana Quintana, a research associate from the Heritage, states that Cuba has supported terrorist organizations, like the FARC and the ETA; while also supporting dictatorships like Venezuela. This last case is the most notorious as it is the most recent one (since connections between Cuba and the two terrorist organizations mentioned above “officially ended” in 1991), where the Cuban High Command helped Venezuela deal with the protests in a violent fashion, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of protesters, mostly students. The G2 (The Cuban military intelligence agency) also got in Venezuela, and it is suspected that they carried several assassinations to silence people who knew too much.
Following Obama’s decision to normalize relations with Cuba, people started accusing the President of being a traitor, as it is thought this move will hurt US taxpayers. But the real questions arises, apart from helping a dictatorship recently, which should be condemned by the United Nations, is Cuba really deserving of the punishment of being in the Terrorist Supporting Countries List?
