Even though most societies are driven by free-market values, all of us still believe that should help one another. Some people may become successes and some people may become failures. There is a level of will in what people achieve, but we must admit that there is also luck, privilege, connections, and timing. Not all people became rich, but we cannot blame the poor if they are poor. We live in a competitive society and not everyone can become a champion. This is why we should foster the spirit of cooperation among ourselves. Paying taxes according to our capabilities is part of this.
The rich should not complain about paying taxes because they also spend lots of money in taking risks. When a person pays taxes, he or she is helping the local economy to prosper. We are paying for more reliable technologies, safer streets, well-compensated government employees and better industries (Slemrod, 2002).
