Silent Killer Poem
Silent Killer
I was recently told by a family member, a popular saying that is traditionally echo to silence someone. “Just let it go.” Too often this is the turbulent approach families use to deal with family problems and drama. “Just let it go.” Or, “let it be.” But what does this accomplish? What does it really achieve when we choose to let something that needs to be talked about, aired out, go?
Let It Go
Let it go is an American idiom meaning forget it, to stop worrying about it. Its alternative phrase, let it be, which means leave the situation alone as it is. But how does one forget or let go of something that is creating a major storm within a family circle? How do you let be when a family member betrays you? Or when a sibling acts

Life is precious. Sometimes throughout life we all experience both good and bad. Sometimes life is rough, even brutal. Experiences throughout life can leave one scarred; we may not always live up to what we can be, or are able to achieve. Whether or not life has left you scarred, or you have scarred the lives of others, you still deserve the right to live. “To the Mercy Killers”, by Dudley Randall, is a poem about life; Randall believes that mercy should be granted to all of us, despite the imperfect life we have lived. Throughout the poem Randall uses irony and metaphors to portray the theme of “To the Mercy Killers.”…

In Mark Doty’s writings, varying views of a single topic can be found. As he analyzes topics through his poems or essays, he conveys many messages that are often opposites or seem to have no connection. Rather than one stance, he has multiple thoughts that are dispersed like a shotgun shell. Diverse opinions are found giving multiple positions to a single idea. Before dissecting Doty’s vague analysis, I first have to ask why he must he examine and analyze in the first place.…

“The Sound of Silence” is a song that exhibits numerous images of the feeling of isolation, embellishing with the motif of silence. The first two stanzas of the song strongly correlate with the story of Ethan Frome which accurately describes the inner thoughts and emotions of Ethan. The song starts with the phrase, "Hello darkness, my old friend” (Simon l). The phrase seems to have been utilized as if it is meant to describe the character of Ethan since the very beginning of the book where Ethan stands in the dark side of the church. thereby defining his cold, miserable character.…

Unfortunately the relationship between the speaker and the mother in the poem is unclear as it is stated that her mother has passed away and is in a grave, which is shown here in the following excerpt “… into the grave!” but all throughout the poem she speaks of her mother’s courage, which is shown here “courage that my mother had. Went with her, and is with her still… if instead she’d left to me. The thing she took into the grave!–That courage like a rock” which is not typically something that is said by someone who didn’t have a good relationship with the person who’d passed…

A soldier’s suffering holds no refrain from anyone, no matter what title or identity they have. In both the worlds of soldiers in those in the poem entitled “losses” by Randall Jarrell and at Devon school in “A Separate Peace” by John Knowles, there are several relationships that they share. Both center around the lives of soldiers and soon to be soldiers during the cruel time of the second World War which was happening in Europe. Jarrell experiments with multiple identity in the combination of several speakers united in one, all wasted even before they could be conceded into the real experience of war. In the book World War II symbolizes many themes related to each other in the novel, from the arrival of adulthood to the triumph of the Evil…

With all of the violence in the past, and now the most recent shooting in Charleston, South Carolina, society is more scared than ever. Dylann Roof, proven to be a white supremacist, walked into a church in Charleston, South Carolina and killed innocent people. This incident hit home for so many Americans because not only did the innocent people die, but it was in one of the safest places imaginable, a church (Tauber, Michelle). Many believe that weapons are to blame for this, and others believe that racism is the main focal point. This is not the first of violent crimes in a local church. A poem was written by Dudley Randall about a true story that happened in Birmingham, Alabama in 1963. A group of white supremacists bombed a church that belonged to Martin Luther King Jr. What they did not know was that there were four little girls playing in there at the time. The church should be a safe, quiet place one can pray to God, but these incidents indicate that violence is creeping into the most innocent of…

    Sympathy Poem

The metal cage holds in those who are turned away from society and hurts them in the process. The poem Sympathy was written by Paul Laurence Dunbar. It explores the racism that imprisons his soul. Dunbar uses the caged bird as a symbol of racism. The entrapped bird is hurt and injured while great things are happening around it. The tone is pleading and anguish over the racism that is expressed toward the black community. It explains the wonderful sun and beautiful weather and how the caged bird cannot feel it because it is entrapped by racism. “But a prayer that he sends from his heart’s deep core But a plea, that upward to Heaven he flings.” This shows how he is adamant on getting rid of racism but he is the caged bird trapped by the racism and hatred of others. As the poem continues on Dunbar shows the darkness of racism and how the caged bird can even be bruised and sore. “When his wing is bruised and his bosom sore, When he beats his bars and he would be free; It is not a carol of joy or glee.” He beats his wings against the cage which is society holding him in by racism. The only way he would be free if society forgets the differences and establishes a community that accepts adversity. This is not a happy matter and Dunbar is sending a message to everyone by begging them to fight racism instead of embracing it. The frail caged bird can only be free by the decisions and actions of others and it is powerless over the might and will of humanity. Tear the cages apart and bend the bars for we are all birds within a…

In the poem, “Sympathy”, the author uses a slightly abbreviated version of the first line at the end of each stanza to show repetition and purpose. For example, in the last stanza the author says “I know why the caged bird sings, ah me” and ends with “I know why the caged bird sings” to show that the author not only understands why the bird does what he does but also that the author resonates with the bird emotionally (Lines 15, 21). In this instance, the author is describing the birds cries for freedom, even going as far as to say he sends a prayer for this purpose. The author ends the line saying he knows why the caged bird sings to show he himself has cried for freedom. The repetition of key lines in the poem grabs the reader’s attention and emphasizes the important message the author is trying to convey.…

“Anger is a basic human emotion that is experienced by all people” (Mills, 2005). It is a natural response that is triggered when someone feels hurt or mistreated. Although, it is not just a clear-cut emotion that consists of one general feeling that is the same for everyone. The levels of anger that a person feels may not always be identical and there are varying degrees of responses that someone can express when they are experiencing this sentiment. How often a person gets angry, how intensely they feel this emotion, and how long it lasts varies for every individual. This results in a range of intensity of the anger that they express. How a person decides to handle this emotional signal can be a decisive factor as to any consequential effects…
